Men locked into playoffs after 5-2 defeat of Huntington

GOSHEN, Ind. — Filippo Bigardi and Martim Cafe won in both singles and doubles action Tuesday as the Goshen College men's tennis team clinched a postseason berth with a 5-2 win over Huntington University at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Cafe won in a pair of tiebreaks at no. 3 singles while Bigardi posted a more comfortable 7-5, 6-3 win at no. 1 after Goshen (6-5, 4-3) swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead in the team's next-to-last home match of the conference season.

Hermes Flores and Evan Beck won three-set matches as well for the Maple Leafs, who continue their streak of making the conference tournament every year since the event adopted its present dual-match format. Playing at no. 5 and no. 6 singles respectively, Flores and Beck each dropped 6-2 sets before coming back to win 6-4 in the decisive third stanza.

Diego Tapia got the Foresters (3-5, 3-3) on the scoreboard, taking a 6-0 third set from Josh Friesen at no. 4 singles after the players split 6-4 decisions. Rodrigo Manzo won the other HU point when Juan Miguel Ciudad retired after the team match was decided.

The Maple Leaf women were less fortunate, dropping their match to the Foresters by a 7-0 margin. Hannah McCoy won her second set 6-1 at no. 3 singles, forcing the only third-set match tiebreaker of the afternoon.

Sarah Hinshaw and Anna Osborne recorded GC's best doubles showing on the women's side, losing 6-4 to Lanae Singleton and Charlotte Solli at no. 2. Huntington won all three doubles matches but received just one point for the entire segment under the new scoring used in the NAIA this season.

The Maple Leaf men and women will split up for their return to action on Thursday. The women will host Olivet College at 4 p.m., while the men travel to Indiana Wesleyan University for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Midwest regional tournament that continues through Saturday.
