Ashley Arroyo whacks a forehand.

Women soar over Eagles in tennis home opener

Arroyo wins twice as Goshen edges Judson in last match off court

GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's tennis team topped Judson University for the first time ever Friday when Ashley Arroyo's walk-off win at no. 5 singles gave the Maple Leafs a 4-3 victory in a non-conference match at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.

Arroyo doubled up on the victories, pairing with Elsie Koop Liechty to get a 6-2 victory at no. 3 doubles, while Sarah Hinshaw pulled out a third-set match tiebreaker and Hannah McCoy won her second straight match via shutout as the Maple Leafs (1-4) came back to earn their first non-conference win over an NAIA opponent since 2014.

Judson won the men's match 4-0, although Goshen was leading in each of the remaining three matches when a decision was reached and play was abandoned.

The Eagle women (0-1) won the doubles point, taking the first two matches off the courts at nos. 1 and 2 doubles by scores of 6-4 and 6-2, respectively. One of those wins came at a cost, though, as a nagging injury aggravated during the no. 2 match prompted Samantha Brackenrig to pull out of singles play. Since each team started the match with the minimum six available players, that withdrawal forced the Eagles to default at no. 6 singles to give Goshen its first point of the day.

McCoy put the Maple Leafs in front with her fourth straight 6-0 set, winning the first singles match to reach its natural completion by a 6-0, 6-0 score at no. 4 singles. Two matches later, Hinshaw raced to a 9-3 lead in her match tiebreaker before finishing off the win to make it 3-2 in the team count.

The Eagles tied the score when Sofia Corona Garza won at no. 1 singles, making it 2-2, and when Hailey Haws topped Victoria Oakes at no. 3 singles, making it 3-3. The third singles victory, which would have given them the team match, proved elusive, however.

On the men's side, Goshen started the match with five players, giving Judson an instant 1-0 lead by default at no. 6 singles. The Eagles won the first match off the courts, a 6-3 win at the top doubles spot, which combined with Goshen's default at no. 3 to win the doubles point for a 2-0 lead.

Victories by Dimitri Ingrassia and Alexandre Veltkamp finished off the 4-0 victory for the Judson men (1-0). The other three singles matches – none of which had finished the first game of the second set – were left unfinished thanks to Goshen's schedule calling for two matches on Saturday.

GC's men fall to 2-3 on the season.

Both Maple Leaf teams are back in action Saturday when they host Grace to kick off a Crossroads League tri-match. The Lancers will play Mount Vernon Nazarene at approximately 1 p.m. on Goshen's courts, followed by another Maple Leaf match with MVNU at approximately 4:30.
