Tennis matches suspended with score tied as Leafs, MVNU race to completion

Freshman Godzisz takes three wins on day but team match is still 3-3

GOSHEN, Ind. — Meaghan Godzisz, Victoria Oakes and Dan Boussom all checked the win column multiple times Saturday as the Goshen College men's and women's tennis teams posted matching results, with each team losing 6-1 to Grace College and tying Mount Vernon Nazarene University 3-3 at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. The Goshen-Mount Vernon Nazarene matches were suspended and will be finished next week.

Godzisz went 3-1 on the day, pulling out the lone singles win of the morning match for the Maple Leaf women (1-5, 0-5 Crossroads League) when she topped Ellie Hughes 10-3 in a match tiebreaker at no. 1 singles. Grace (4-0, 4-0) swept through doubles to open that match, then cruised through the bottom four singles matches to take a 5-0 lead.

Goshen's Sarah Hinshaw pushed Jayna Armstrong into a first-set tiebreaker at no. 2 singles, ultimately dropping that 8-6 before losing the second set 6-4 in the final match off the court.

The Lancer men (5-1, 4-1) topped their hosts in the first match on the men's side as well, getting default victories at two positions with the Maple Leafs (2-4, 2-3) shorthanded due to injury. Grace claimed both doubles matches by a 6-3 score and finished the remaining singles matches in reverse order, sweeping its way along until Javier Gallego Murcia won a match tiebreak at no. 1 against Max Rozas.

In the middle match of the day, Grace blanked MVNU 7-0 in the men's and women's matches. Then the fun started. With the radar indicating a line of showers headed straight for Goshen, the teams moved up the final match of the day to 3:15 p.m., starting 75 minutes early. They also elected to start with singles play rather than the usual doubles, hoping that one side could win four of the six singles points and clinch the match to render doubles irrelevant.

With the Maple Leafs still down a player, MVNU opened the men's match with an immediate 1-0 lead and added a second point in the second set when Caleb Shenk retired due to injury at no. 5 singles. Goshen ended any thoughts of a quick win for the Cougars (0-3, 0-3) by ripping off the next three matches off the court, leaving the hope for a singles decision at no. 4 where Wesley Beck and Clayton Amburgy were locked in a tight second set.

Beck had taken the opener 7-5, leaving Goshen six games from the match win and the team victory, and served at 5-6 in the second set hoping to force a tiebreaker. Amburgy broke on the second of four chances, though, forcing a match tiebreak in lieu of a third set. The Cougar jumped out to a 5-2 lead, though Beck saved two match points to close within 9-5 before falling to level the match.

The race to get off the courts meant that the women began playing doubles matches as soon as courts were available, leading to the unusual situation where singles and doubles went on side-by-side. The teams split the top four singles matches, leaving the team score 2-2 as the skies grew darker. The Cougars nabbed a 3-2 lead with a win at no. 6 singles, the first match of the second wave to go on court.

Mount Vernon Nazarene took the first doubles match, dropping a pair of games in a 6-game set at no. 3. Before the Cougars could celebrate too much, however, the other early doubles match broke Goshen's way, preventing either team from claiming the doubles point until the full lineup had been played on that side of the ball.

That left Goshen needing to win both remaining matches to claim the team victory, with the small matter that Hannah McCoy was involved in both preventing them from being played simultaneously.

After eking out a 7-5 win in the first set, McCoy used an early break to jump out to a 4-1 lead in the second. The match slowed down, with each player holding after the third change of ends, but McCoy served things out for a 7-5, 6-2 win to level the match.

Across the way, doubles play had begun in the men's match; while the teams held out hope that it would not be needed, they ran out of options. The Maple Leafs, down 1-0 in the best-of-three series for the doubles point, needed both remaining matches to claim the win. Both teams broke early to go up 2-1.

Meanwhile, the final women's match began. After three straight breaks put the Cougars up 2-1, Mount Vernon Nazarene was set to serve at 40-30 for its first hold of the match when the rains came at 5:16 p.m. EDT.

After a 66-minute delay and multiple stops and starts of the raindrops, play was abandoned at 6:23. Per conference and Intercollegiate Tennis Association rules, the matches cannot be called official until one team has at least four points, so play will resume from the point of stoppage.

The suspended matches set up a schedule that is even stranger than most match day schedules, even amidst a global pandemic and a rearranged conference slate. The completion of Saturday's matches has been moved to Wednesday, when Goshen's courts are already in use and the Cougars return to north-central Indiana to visit Bethel University.

Goshen will open the day by hosting Spring Arbor University at 9:30 a.m. at the GC Tennis Complex. Mount Vernon Nazarene will open its day at 1:30 p.m. against Saint Francis on Bethel's home courts at Knollwood Country Club in Granger.

At 4:30, each team plays its second match of the day, with Goshen hosting Marian and MVNU playing Bethel.

Finally, the Cougars will load up and make the 32-mile detour to Goshen to complete the matches that began Saturday. Estimated first-serve time for the resumption of play is 8 p.m. EDT, but the actual time may vary wildly based on events earlier in the day.

As always, stay tuned to GoLeafs.net and GC social media accounts throughout the day on Wednesday for the latest updates.
