Maple Leafs power past Thomas More in return to home floor

GC adds 13th win of season before starting conference run next week

GOSHEN, Ind. — Eight Goshen College men's volleyball players got on the scoresheet Tuesday night in a three-set sweep of Thomas More University as the NAIA 15th-ranked Maple Leafs won 25-15, 25-16, 25-13 at Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.

Lucas Sauder led all players with 7 kills while Elias Baer and Andy Bennett each had 6. Michael Wahl added 5 winners on top of a match-high 21 assists and 6 digs. Ian Fox led all players with 3 blocks while Sauder and Alexander Rabadzhiev each had 3 aces.

Goshen (13-6) dropped the first point of the match and won 10 of the next 12 to start its 61-minute cruise through the match. The Maple Leafs hit at least .217 in every set, posting at least 9 winners in each stanza, and held the Saints (4-8) to fewer kills than errors in two of the three sets.

Thomas More got 5 kills from Mason Cobler but struggled to a minus-.086 hitting percentage in the match, finishing with 16 kills and 12 digs to go along with a solitary block.

The Maple Leafs went up 14-3 in the first set and never looked back, allowing TMU to win two points on its own serve in the first set. The teams were tied as late as 7-all in the second set before Goshen ran off a 7-2 run that eventually reached 15-5. The Saints got some footing back with a sideout and a Conner Young ace to get within 22-14, but two service errors ended the set and put GC up two sets to none.

GC used three four-point runs in the third set to pull ahead 18-5 before the Saints got several rallies back against the Maple Leaf reserves. Will Gaby added a kill to make it 23-12 as part of a third 3-point GC run and a TMU attack error ended the match.

Goshen is now idle for eight days before traveling to Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan, next Thursday to begin a streak of four consecutive Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matches to close out the season. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EDT on Thursday, March 18.
