GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College men's tennis team blew away the Trine University Thunder without dropping a set Wednesday afternoon while the Maple Leaf women lost 5-2 to Indiana University Kokomo in simultaneous but unrelated matches at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
All six players who saw action were double winners for the Maple Leaf men (4-7). Insee Akarapan and Pedro Scattolon each had two of their three sets end in 6-0 scorelines; Scattolon did not drop a game in his delineation of Drew Dixon at no. 5 singles, while Akarapan posted one 6-0 set in each of singles and doubles with both matches coming against Jaxon Davis.
Senior Josh Friesen won the clinching point at no. 4 singles for the Maple Leafs, topping Ryan Smith 6-2, 6-3 at no. 4 singles while pairing with Scattolon to knock off Smith and Aaron Streit at no. 1 doubles.
Freshman Szofia Kallai and sophomore Meaghan Godzisz each earned singles victories for the GC women in their defeat at the hands of the Cougars.
IUK topped Goshen in all three doubles matches, but all three went to at least 10 games (6-4) with two of the three going to the precipice of a tiebreaker at 7-5. Godzisz and Kallai reached the latter milestone at no. 2 doubles as did Anna Osborne and Naomi Lapp Klassen at no. 3.
Kallai would earn Goshen its first point of the day at no. 1 singles in a straight-set win over Gabbie Orlando, bringing GC back within 3-1 in the team competition. After losing her first set, Godzisz battled Larissa O'Rourke into a second-set tiebreak before Godzisz ripped off 17 of the last 19 points to win the match.
By that point, though, the Cougars had clinched the team match as Reiley Heiser finished a second-set tiebreak at no. 4 singles to wrap up the third singles point and the fourth point overall.
While Wednesday's match was not a conference affair for either Goshen team, the Maple Leaf men got another step closer to knowing their opponent in next Tuesday's Crossroads League tournament quarterfinal after makeup action elsewhere in the league. Goshen will be the sixth seed and visit the third seed, whose identity is still up in the air.
If Marian defeats Grace on Saturday, Marian will knock the Lancers into third place and set up a State Road 15 clash between Goshen and Grace in the opening round. If the Lancers win, however, a three-way tie for third place between Marian, Huntington and Spring Arbor would ensue, and Huntington has the tiebreaker for third place based on a 7-4 aggregate score in the three teams' head-to-head matches.
Goshen will play another non-conference dual match on Thursday when it hosts Judson University with first serve set for 4 p.m. EDT at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
