GOSHEN, Ind. — One member of each Goshen College men's tennis doubles team was also a winner at singles Thursday afternoon as the Maple Leafs topped Judson University 4-1 at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. GC's women lost 4-0 to Judson at the same time despite a doubles win from Sarah Hinshaw and Hannah McCoy.
The Maple Leaf men (5-7) got straight-set singles wins from Insee Akarapan and Josh Friesen in the match, which was called at the point of clinching because GC was playing its sixth match in the last six days and Judson was heading into four straight days of matches. The match calling also potentially cost Mario Gomez a chance at a straight-set win of his own while Jonah Anderson eked out a 12-10 match tiebreak and Pedro Scattolon was headed to a third set of his own.
In doubles competition, GC swept the three matches, although two of them – Friesen and Scattolon at no. 1 and Anderson and Gomez at no. 3 — came down to the final game, where the other team winning would have resulted in the match going back to all square. Akarapan and Kevin Bollmann had the easiest win of the day at 6-2.
On the women's side, despite Hinshaw and McCoy pulling out a 7-2 tiebreak win at no. 1 doubles, the Eagles (1-0) took both of the other matches to claim the team point for that segment.
Hinshaw took the first set of her singles match 7-5, but three Eagle wins at nos. 1, 4 and 5 singles brought the team match to 4-0 and its conclusion. She and Meaghan Godzisz were each on serve in a second set that would have won the match and sent it to a third set, respectively.
Goshen's women are now idle until a non-conference clash with Aquinas at noon on Saturday, Sept. 25. The men will play Tuesday in a conference-tournament match at Grace or Huntington with the winner moving on to a semifinal on Thursday. Full details will be released by the conference office after the regular season concludes Saturday.
