Doubles point not enough to salvage conference tournament win

Goshen wins doubles competition but Grace responds with singles sweep to knock out Leafs

WARSAW, Ind. — The Goshen College men's tennis team captured two of the three doubles matches Tuesday afternoon but watched its quest for a Crossroads League tournament championship come up short at the first hurdle in a 4-1 loss to Grace College.

Jonah Anderson paired with Mario Gomez to win the first match of the court at no. 3 doubles before Kevin Bollman and Insee Akarapan doubled up with another 6-3 win at no. 2 doubles to end that segment of competition. Due to limited court space with the match moved indoors, the remaining doubles match was called off at that point to allow singles action to begin.

Anderson and Josh Friesen each won completed sets for the Maple Leafs (5-8), with Anderson taking his first set at no. 2 singles and Friesen going to a tiebreaker in his first set at no. 4. Ramiro Candia would end up emerging with the last two sets to clinch the team match at no. 4, which meant that Anderson did not get a chance to finish his second set and earn the point for Goshen in the third.

Neither team had any double winners: Goshen won all the doubles matches and Grace (9-2) won all the singles matches.

With the win, the Lancers advance to the semifinal round of the conference tournament and will travel to Marian University on Thursday. The two schools could still have individual players meet again in next week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournament.

Goshen returns to the courts for a non-conference matchup against Aquinas College on Saturday. First ball is set for noon at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
