Leafs get tenth win ahead of big match with Aquinas

Rabadzhiev picks up a career-high six aces

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Maple Leafs men's volleyball team cruised to its tenth win of the season with a sweep at Cornerstone, winning 25-17, 25-20, 25-16.

Alexander Rabadzhiev had another incredible game, with 18 kills and nine digs in the three-set match. He also had a career-high six aces, with five coming in the first set alone.

"Alex is a phenomenal athlete," head coach Lauren Ford said after the contest. "He just turns it on and shifts gear when needed. He understands the game and what he needs to do to be successful for his team."

Rabadzhiev is second in the NAIA in kills, with 216 to his name. "He's probably the most humble about it," Ford mentioned. "He truly is having fun."

Goshen had quick 7-2 leads to start the first and third sets. The second set was closer throughout, but Goshen scored the final four points to take a 21-20 lead to a 25-20 win.

Michael Wahl had 34 assists, leading an offense with a .333 hitting percentage. Lucas Sauder had six kills, four total blocks, and seven digs. Christian Rodriguez contributed five kills and five digs. On the defensive end, Andy Bennett added four blocks, and Ian Fox had three in total.

The Leafs have won five of their last six matches and are 10-4 overall. More importantly, they improve their record in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference to 3-3 after starting 1-3 in league play. GC is 4-0 against Cornerstone (5-10, 1-7 WHAC) all-time and has won 12 of the 13 sets they have played against the Golden Eagles.

You can watch the Maple Leafs attempt a third straight sweep on Wednesday, February 16, at 7:00 pm in Gunden Gymnasium. "Tonight, I kept emphasizing discipline and patience – which is what is needed tomorrow," said Ford. The opponent is the 8-3 Aquinas Saints, who, like the Maple Leafs, is receiving votes in the coaches' poll.
