Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Justin DeWeese

Strong fifth set pushes Goshen past LTU

Maple Leafs hit .625 in the final set

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - A dominant fifth-set led to a 3-2 victory for the Goshen men's volleyball team at Lawrence Tech on Tuesday night. The Maple Leafs won the first set 25-21 before dropping the next two, 25-18 and 25-18. The Leafs rallied, though, winning the final two 25-21 and 15-8.

Goshen led in the first set from 2-1 onward. The same fact was true for the Blue Devils in the second set. And while the teams battled to tie the third set at eight, LTU never looked back from that point on in that set. They won 25-18 for a second straight stanza.

In a crucial fourth set for Goshen, the teams were tied seven times. They were tied at 16 when Goshen scored five straight as Michael Wahl served, forcing two Blue Devils timeouts. The lead grew to 24-17, and the Leafs were at set point. Lawrence Tech fought back by scoring four straight, but Goshen held on, 25-21.

The fifth set was controlled by the Maple Leafs. Goshen posted a .625 hitting percentage in the set with 11 kills and one error on the way to a 15-8 win. On the other hand, LTU had four kills and four errors.

Alexander Rabadzhiev led Goshen with 23 kills, but Lucas Sauder added another 18. Wahl had 49 assists, leading the offense that hit at a .259 clip. Christian Rodriguez had 14 digs, six kills, and five blocks. Ian Fox had six blocks, and Brayton Yoder had ten digs and both of the team's aces.

Goshen (18-7, 5-5 WHAC) and Lawrence Tech (9-16, 1-9 WHAC) face each other again tomorrow, but in Goshen this time. Head coach Lauren Ford shared that the team will need to have patience and trust themselves and one another to shut down the Blue Devils' hopes at revenge tomorrow.

That game will be at 7:00 pm in Gunden Gymnasium on Wednesday. Tickets for the game can be purchased here.
