GOSHEN, Ind. – The Maple Leafs softball team took care of business when they faced off against Spring Arbor on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Goshen. The Leafs won 10-4 and 3-1, highlighted by a grand slam from
Mia Pawelski in game one.
While the Cougars scored the first run in game one, the Maple Leafs had a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings before laying down seven runs in the sixth. Goshen was down 4-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth. Then, with the bases loaded,
Edith Vega walked to tie the game at four. After a pitching change,
Mia Pawelski was up as the next batter and sent one over the wall to left-center. It was her first home run of the season. That proved to be the game-winning hit as the Leafs went on to win 10-4.
Carissa Fillingame had a solo shot for Goshen in the third, and
Alisyn Catenacci hit a two-run homer in the sixth. Catenacci also had an RBI single, as did
Jessica Bachtell. Pawelski also earned the win on the mound, not allowing any runs in the last inning and a third.
Shea VanScoter had six strikeouts in the first 5.2 innings pitched.
Pawelski continued to pitch in game two – earning the start. She would go 3.1 innings allowing just three hits and one earned run. Meanwhile , Catenacci had another RBI single in the first at the plate and Bachtell hit a double to left-center in the second that scored Fillingame.
With a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth,
Claire Ouellette homered to left-center – the fourth of the day for Goshen. Spring Arbor didn't have any home runs during the games. This was Ouellette's first home run of the season. Catenacci was pitching the final 3.2 innings and didn't allow any earned runs. Goshen won 3-1, and Catenacci improved her pitching record to 3-1.
The Maple Leafs (22-24, 12-20 CL) take a break for finals week and then host Huntington on Friday, April 29, at 3:00 pm for senior Day.
