WHITING, Ind. - The Goshen men's volleyball team won a set when they needed it most against Calumet College of St. Joseph. Down 2-0, they won the third set 25-22 before falling in the fourth set and losing the match 3-1 in the first ever matchup between the two schools.
After a kill by
Christian Rodriguez from
Wyatt Bollinger in the first set to make the score 6-5 in favor of CCSJ, the Crimson Wave went off on a 9-2 run to more than double the Maple Leafs' score at 15-7. They finished the set with two straight aces to win 25-15.
Calumet started the second set with five straight points - part of an 8-0 run spanning between the first two sets. Goshen quickly responded by cutting the lead to one on multiple occasions, but couldn't tie it back up. CCSJ scored eight of the last ten points to win 25-17 in the second. The tide turned in the third as Goshen had an 8-1 run to turn a one-point deficit into a six point lead.
Leo Minetto and
Ishmail Bangura both had aces during the stretch. The Crimson Wave tied it up at 16 but GC didn't let them take the lead as they hung on for a 25-22 victory.
The fourth set was the cleanest offensively for Calumet. they had 15 kills and just one attack error in the set with a hitting percentage of .560. Francis Hauze had 25 kills during the afternoon and a .488 hitting percentage for CCSJ. They were also guided by Miguel Mendez Palencia's 14 digs and Ari Moen's 37 assists.
Ishmail Bangura had 16 kills, 11 digs, and four aces for the Leafs.
Leo Minetto had 20 assists and four block assists.
Now at 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the WHAC, Goshen will face Bethel on Tuesday, February 14, at 7:00 pm in Mishawaka. While the schools have faced each other in numerous other sports while competing for the U.S. Highway 20 Cup, this is the first time they have faced off in men's volleyball.
