Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. - A sacrifice fly off the bat of Grace Schmitt in extra innings led to the Goshen softball team's first win of the season. They defeated IU-South Bend 6-5 in eight innings. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the third, with the Titans ahead 11-9.

IUSB scored first in the top of the first when Jaela Patton flew into a double play that ended the inning, but only after Maddie Leisher crossed home. Goshen scored their first runs of the season in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Mckenzie Richardson reached base on a fly ball dropped by the left fielder, scoring Kaylee Kates. Later in the inning, Carissa Fillingame walked, scoring Kyra Wilson from third.

Kaylee Darnell homered in the third to tie the game back up. In the fourth, the Leafs got two runs as Fillingame singled to center. Hailey Elgan moved from second to third, scoring on a throwing error. Fillingame advanced to second on the throw and then scored the second unearned run on the error.

The Titans changed the tide of the game yet again in the top of the seventh with three runs. Darnell hit a two-run shot, her second home run of the game. Then Olivia Zarantonello hit an RBI double that gave the visitors the lead at 5-4. Goshen tied it in the bottom of the seventh with two outs as Ella McLeod singled to right center, and Esme Pico scored on an error.

With a runner at second to start extra innings, Goshen never let the runner get past third as Esme Pico got three quick outs on the mound. In the bottom of the inning, Grace Schmitt's sac fly scored Kates and gave Goshen the 6-5 win.

Pico earned the win for the Maple Leafs, pitching the final four innings and allowing two earned runs and four hits. Alisyn Catenacci got the start - also allowing two earned runs and four hits in four innings pitched. The IU-South Bend pitchers only allowed one earned run, but five were unearned due to four errors on the day.

McLeod was 2-4 for Goshen with two singles. Fillingame, Schmitt, and Richardson all had RBIs. Kates scored two of the six GC runs.

Game two was packed with offense but was suspended in the bottom of the third at 6:22 pm due to darkness. The highlight for the Leafs through that point in the game was a grand slam from Alisyn Catenacci in the second inning that put Goshen on top 7-6. The Titans lead 11-9 with one out in the bottom of the third.

Goshen is in Florida from February 27 through March 3 for ten games in five days.
