Rodammer hits second grand slam of season as GC baseball has won four of their last five games

Rodammer leads the Crossroads League in RBIs with 20

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Jenner Rodammer hit a grand slam for a second straight weekend and the Maple Leafs won their first series of the season on Sunday in Owensboro, Kentucky. Goshen won game one 6-4 and followed it with a 7-5 victory in game two.

"We had a couple of good team wins today," said head coach Alex Childers after the games. "We got a few leads early and then made some big pitches in some big spots."

All of Goshen's six runs from game one came in the second inning. The bases were loaded as AJ Lenn reached on a fielder's choice, Trent Sillett singled and Collin Echols walked. Austin Martin reached base on a fielding error from the third baseman and AJ Lenn scored. Preston Anderson got an RBI as he walked in a run, and then Jenner Rodammer came to the plate. He hit a grand slam to left field to bump the score up to 6-0. Rodammer currently leads the Crossroads League in RBIs with 20 and is tied for second with home runs. Two of his three homers are grand slams. "Obviously everyone remembers the big hit by Jenner," Childers noted, "but that was set up by some huge team at-bats to get on base and get him in that spot."

David Lopez got the start for GC on the mound and allowed three runs in 4.1 innings. Cole Troutman hit an RBI double for Brescia in the fifth and Miguel Rubio had a two-RBI single later in the inning. Wyatt Griskey hit an RBI single in the seventh, but the comeback effort came up short for the home team as the Leafs won 6-4.

Goshen only had three hits in the game, but they came at the right times. David Lopez earned the win and Austin Martin picked up the save, striking out two batters in the two thirds of an inning he pitched. Colby Pieper struck out seven in 5.1 innings of relief pitching for the Bearcats, but the damage had already been done by Goshen.

The Maple Leafs had an offensive showing in the second inning of game two as well. They scored once in the first when Joseph Cerda hit an RBI single to score Rodammer. In the second, Goshen loaded the bases when Andres Garcia and Trent Sillett walked and Joshua Rubio was hit by a pitch. Austin Martin walked next, which scored Garcia. Later in the inning, Jenner Rodammer shot one down the right field line and scored all three baserunners with a triple. Rodammer would finish the day with eight RBIs between the two games.

The Bearcats hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second, but Goshen responded when Trent Sillett hit an RBI double to center field that scored Garcia. The GC lead was at 6-1 by this point, but Brescia fought back yet again. Cameron Dean hit a two-RBI double and a walk by Juan Guzman with the bases loaded scored a run in the third. The Bearcats pulled within one in the fourth when Miguel Rubio scored from third on a wild pitch after hitting a triple.

Rodammer provided a cushion in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle that scored Austin Martin, which took the game to the final score of 7-5. Dalton Soergel earned the win for Goshen in his three inning start. Lance Wilson threw two solid innings in relief where he struck out four and walked none. Benjamin Witterstaetter earned the save - not allowing any hits or runs in the final two innings.

"I was proud of the way our guys bounced back today after losing a tough one in game two of the series," said Childers. "I think the most exciting part is that we still have not played our best baseball and we have continued to get better every day."

Andres Garcia and Austin Martin each scored two runs in game two. Trent Sillett went 2-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Sillett has the fifth-best batting average in the league at .417. Jenner Rodammer was 2-3 with a walk, a triple, four RBIs and a run.

Now at 4-7 overall, Goshen looks to win a third straight game and a fifth in the last six games when they play at Thomas More on Tuesday, February 28. The single nine-inning game will start at 2:00 pm in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
