MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Goshen softball team beat Lynn University 4-2 and the University of Fort Lauderdale 11-0 on Wednesday, moving their win streak to four and their overall record to 5-4. VanScoter threw a one-hitter in game two and nine Maple Leafs had at least one hit in that game.
Head coach Luke Wagner made sure to applaud catcher
Kyra Wilson for calling two amazing games behind the plate. "The catcher is often overlooked when you have two tremendous performances in the circle," he said. "Kyra was instrumental in our success today."
It was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings of game one. Neither Goshen starter
Alisyn Catenacci or Lynn starter Haley Fardanesh allowed any runs through that point and the game was still scoreless. The Fighting Knights had one hit in each of the first four innings but couldn't bring any runs across. Goshen's first hit was a single from
Alyssa McDonald with one out in the fourth. She moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third when
Mckenzie Richardson singled, but the Leafs couldn't get the first run of the game across.
That changed in the fifth inning.
Alisyn Catenacci and
Kaylee Kates both reached base on errors - one by the third baseman and the other from the catcher.
Shea VanScoter walked to load the bases and then Ella McLeod's single scored the first run. Later on, Richardson hit a two-RBI single that scored VanScoter and McLeod to make it 3-0. In the next inning, Catenacci helped her own cause by hitting an RBI single to score
Peyton Foreman.
Lynn made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. After two singles, an error scored an unearned run to make it 4-1 with one out. Then an RBI single from Morgan Simpson made it 4-2. Catenacci got out of the inning with two straight infield popups to end the game.
In seven innings on the mound, Catenacci allowed nine hits but just one earned run. Nine batters were out on flyouts and another nine hit groundouts. The Fighting Knights had three more hits than Goshen but couldn't effectively bring the runners around the bases.
Mckenzie Richardson led Goshen's offense by going 2-4 with two RBIs.
Alyssa McDonald went 2-4 as well. The Maple Leafs had a season-high four stolen bases in the game.
Goshen scored in each of the five innings during game two before winning by mercy rule.
Alyssa McDonald and
Mckenzie Richardson both hit RBI singles in the first and
Kaylee Kates added another one in the second inning to make it 3-0. McDonald hit her second triple of the year in the third inning, which scored Ella McLeod. She scored later in the inning from a single by Richardson. The Maple Leafs took a 6-0 lead after the fourth inning on a sac fly off the bat of McLeod.
The only hit that
Shea VanScoter allowed while on the mound was a single to the third batter of the game. After facing four batters in that inning, she faced the minimum of three batters in each of the next four innings.
In the top of the fifth,
Bianca Diamond scored the seventh GC run on a wild pitch. Then VanScoter racked up three RBIs when she singled but made it around to third after an error by the right fielder and all the Goshen runners made it home. Ella McLeod hit an RBI double to make it 11-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, VanScoter sealed the deal by striking out each of the final three batters - all three were swinging strikeouts. Six of her outs were strikeouts, five were groundouts and four were flyouts. She faced just 16 total batters.
"Our pitching effort today was outstanding," said Wagner. "Both Ali and Shea were dialed in and trusted our defense to make plays behind them."
Goshen had 15 total hits and just one strikeout. VanScoter was the greatest asset offensively as well, going 3-4 with two runs, three RBIs and a double. Kates, McLeod, McDonald, and Richardson all had multiple hits as well. Nine Goshen players had at least one hit. "Offensively the ladies are seeing the ball really well and swinging the bats with a lot of confidence," added Wagner. "They have been grinding in the cages to develop their approaches at the plate and they are reaping the rewards a bit now."
On Thursday, Goshen faces St. Thomas (Fla.) at 2:00 pm before taking on Fort Lauderdale again at 4:30 pm. You can see some behind the scenes softball action from today by checking out the Facebook and Instagram stories on the Goshen College Maple Leafs main athletics accounts.
