Leafs take two against Bethel in U.S. Highway 20 Cup rivalry, riding five-game win streak

Alisyn Catenacci hits two home runs in game one while throwing a complete game

STEVENSVILLE, Mich. - With two lopsided victories over Bethel, the Goshen softball team is now riding a five-game win streak with a 2-0 conference record. Goshen won game one 9-2 and took game two 16-3 in five innings. Due to weather conditions, the games were played in Stevensville, Michigan instead of Mishawaka.

Alisyn Catenacci was the star of the show in game one. The junior hit two home runs and had five RBIs while throwing nine strikeouts and just one walk in a complete game on the mound. She allowed two runs in seven innings during the win, lowering her season ERA to 2.76.

She started the scoring in the second inning with a two-run home run with Kamille Badibanga on base - her first home run of the season. Badibanga also crushed a two-run shot in the third inning to score Mckenzie Richardson. Catenacci's second home run came in the fifth inning. The three-run shot put GC up 8-1 before the Leafs won by a score of 9-2.

Mckenzie Richardson, Kamille Badibanga, Alisyn Catenacci, and Bianca Diamond scored two runs apiece in the game. Richardson, Catenacci, Diamond, and Ella Mcleod all had multi-hit games.

The Leafs brought on even more offense in game two, piling 16 runs on the Pilots.

Ella Mcleod and Alyssa McDonald had run-scoring doubles in the first inning to give the Leafs a 3-0 advantage. Seven of the team's 16 runs came in the second inning, although they scored in all five that were played. Shea VanScoter, Mckenzie Richardson, Kamille Badibanga, and Sydney Lockhart had RBI singles in the inning and Mcleod hit an RBI double. Goshen had eight hits in the second inning while Bethel had six the entire game. In the third, Mcleod had her third RBI hit in as many innings with a single that scored Kaylee Kates. With Alisyn Catenacci's two-RBI single later in the inning, Goshen went up 13-1.

Bethel scored twice in the bottom of the third to make it a ten-run game. In the fourth, Ellie Van Heerde came in to pinch hit for Kaylee Kates, and she homered to left field to record her first homer of the season. The Maple Leafs scored twice more in the top of the fifth to win 16-3.

Goshen had 22 hits - their most in a game since hitting 28 against Spring Arbor in a 20-15 win on April 8, 2019. Since 2018, Goshen is 12-6 against Bethel.

Shea VanScoter earned the win, throwing all five innings on the mound and allowing two earned runs. Mcleod finished with three runs scored and three RBIs, going 3-4 with two doubles. Kates went a perfect 3-3 and scored three times with two stolen bases. VanScoter was also perfect - having a 4-4 game. Alyssa McDonald, Kamille Badibanga, Sydney Lockhart, and Alisyn Catenacci had multiple RBIs to go with Mcleod.

Goshen is on a five-game win streak and the Leafs have won eight of their last nine. The Leafs are at Huntington on Thursday, March 16, at 3:00 pm. Those games were originally scheduled for March 17 but were moved up due to incoming weather.
