MOUNT VERNON, Ind. - At times it seemed as if the Goshen men's volleyball team would be able to pull off the reverse sweep of the Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars on Friday evening. But the team from Ohio rallied at the end of the fourth set to win 3-1.
Hasan Hadzic,
Christian Rodriguez, and
Ishmail Bangura all had 10 or more kills in the match.
The Maple Leafs were up 21-20 in the first set before the Cougars scored the final five points to win 25-21. Goshen used timeouts when down 22-21 and 24-21, but they couldn't stop the Cougars' momentum. The Leafs had a .040 hitting percentage in the set while MVNU was hitting .320.
The Cougars went up quickly in the second set with a 5-1 lead. An 8-3 Goshen run later on tied it at 20, but the home team won 25-22. Goshen had six block assists in the first two sets, but they added six more in the third set alone. The Leafs started by scoring six of the first seven points, and the Cougars took a timeout when the lead grew to 14-6. Goshen was up by ten at multiple points before winning by seven, 25-18.
Mount Vernon rallied at the beginning of the fourth set, going up 13-7 to start off. GC still fought hard, and an ace from
Ishmail Bangura later in the set tied it at 21. Down 23-22, interim head coach Jewel Lehman called a timeout, and the team responded with a kill by
Christian Rodriguez and a block on the next play from
Hasan Hadzic and
Wyatt Bollinger. The Cougars called a timeout next, and they won four of the next five points to win 27-25.
Hadzic improved through the night, totaling 15 kills and a .324 hitting percentage. He added five block assists and four digs.
Wyatt Bollinger had a season-high 12 digs to go with his 41 assists. It was the fourth time he topped 40+ assists in a match.
Christian Rodriguez had 11 kills and five digs.
Ishmail Bangura also had 11 kills, with two aces, five block assists, and four digs.
Kendrick Acda tied a season-high with five digs.
The Cougars are now 16-5 this season and 11-4 in the WHAC. The teams square off in Ariel Arena again tomorrow, March 18, at 3:00 pm.
