Five sixth-inning doubles lead to win in GC's conference opener, Knights win game two by a run

The win in game one ended an 11-game losing streak against Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Goshen baseball team ended an 11-game losing streak against Marian in their Crossroads League opener on Thursday before losing game two by one run. They got the victory in game one with many doubles - a lot of sixth-inning doubles.

The Maple Leafs led 3-2 going into the sixth inning. They had two runs in the second that came with the bases loaded. Nate Lange walked to score Morgan Baker from third, and Preston Anderson was hit by a pitch, bringing around Trent Sillett. Lange scored on a throwing error in the fourth, and the Knights hit a two-run home run to left in the fifth.

Lange led off the sixth inning with a double to center field and moved to third on a wild pitch. Preston Anderson hit the next double, and Lange scored. Jenner Rodammer came up to bat next and doubled to right field, and Anderson moved to third. A Marian pitching change couldn't even stop the Maple Leafs from seeing double. Anderson scored on a wild pitch, and Joseph Cerda doubled to left to score Rodammer. With two outs in the inning, Peyton Smith doubled down the left field line to score Cerda, and Goshen led 7-2, the final score. Goshen had five hits in the sixth inning, and all five were doubles.

Eric Pettipiece earned the win on the mound. In six innings, he allowed two earned runs and just two hits. After allowing four earned runs in his first 3.1 innings this season, Pettipiece has allowed four earned runs in the most recent 16 innings. Benjamin Witterstaetter earned the save by going three innings in relief and allowing no earned runs on one hit.

Goshen had the lead late in game two, but Marian scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win in walk-off fashion.

Lead-off hitter Peyton Smith started the game off with a solo home run to left center. Marian answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single and scored another run on a fielder's choice to go up 2-1. Joshua Rubio's two-RBI single in the second put the Leafs back on top 3-2. The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the second - two were unearned runs as Goshen had two errors in the inning.

AJ Lenn came in to pitch for Goshen in the third inning and threw four innings without conceding a run. He fanned six batters and walked one, allowing just two hits during his outing. The GC offense helped him out in the fourth as Jenner Rodammer hit an RBI single. Joshua Rubio's sac fly in the fifth tied the game at five, and Chris Godden scored on a balk later in the inning to put the Leafs on top.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Marian bats awoke after four innings of not producing any runs. Trey Heidlage doubled to left before Jackson Hogg singled down the right field line to score him. Dion Wintjes reached base on a fielding error and Hogg moved to second. Next, Bryce Davenport singled to left and Hogg came around to score the winning run.

Joshua Rubio had three RBIs for Goshen. Preston Anderson and Trent Sillett each had two hits and Chris Godden scored two runs.

Due to impending weather, the Goshen home opener that was scheduled for Saturday has been pushed back to Sunday, March 5, at 12:00 pm. The Maple Leafs (5-9, 1-1 CL) will be playing Marian again at that time.
