GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen won the second and fourth sets on Saturday against Aquinas but lost in the fifth set 15-12 to a team now 9-4 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Aquinas won the previous match this season in three sets.
An ace from
Pablo Sanchez in the first set gave Goshen a 9-5 lead, and a block by
Juan Llama and
Andy Bennett put them up 13-10. After that, however, Aquinas went on a 9-1 run to take a five-point lead before winning the first set by six.
The Leafs went on s 5-0 run in the next set to take a 9-4 lead, highlighted by kills from
Ishmail Bangura,
Andy Bennett, and
Hasan Hadzic and an ace by
Wyatt Bollinger. Aquinas later scored eight consecutive points to go up 13-11, yet back-to-back aces from
Christian Rodriguez put Goshen in the lead at 17-16. The Leafs later found themselves down 22-20 and called a timeout. After that, they scored the final five points, completed with an ace from
Andy Bennett, and won set two 25-22.
Aquinas pulled away late in the third set to win 25-21, but Goshen did the same in the fourth. Right after a timeout when down 19-16, GC scored nine of the final ten points to win 25-20. Aquinas built up a 13-8 advantage in the fifth, but the Leafs pulled within one at 13-12. The Saints recovered and scored two points to win at 15-12.
Ishmail Bangura had a double-double with 20 kills and ten digs.
Christian Rodriguez was just a kill short - he had nine kills and 11 digs. Rodriguez also finished with four aces.
Andy Bennett had seven block assists, and
Juan Llama had six - a career-high.
Wyatt Bollinger led the offense with 45 assists, tying a season-high.
Hasan Hadzic had 15 kills.
Goshen hosts Bethel on Tuesday, March 7, at 7:00 pm in a U.S. Highway 20 Cup matchup.
