MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Goshen's eight hits in game one at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday came from eight different batters, but the Leafs managed just one hit in game two against Logan Fox. The Cougars won the games 12-2 and 7-1.
MVNU put up five runs in the bottom of the second and four in the fourth. While Goshen outhit the home team, Mount Vernon had nine baserunners from walks and players hit by pitches. Five runs were unearned as a result of Goshen's errors. The Leafs had RBI singles from
Justin Dambruck in the fourth and
Jenner Rodammer in the seventh inning.
Trent Sillett and
Austin Martin scored the runs. In addition to Dambruck and Rodammer, the other players that had a hit were
Chris Godden,
Trent Sillett,
Preston Anderson,
Lance Wilson,
Joshua Rubio and
Gabe Kermode.
Preston Anderson allowed five earned runs in four innings pitched.
Lance Wilson pitched the next 2.2 innings before the game ended by run rule, giving up just one hit but two earned runs.
The start of game two looked promising for the Leafs as
Chris Godden hit a leadoff single. He stole second and advanced to third when
Jenner Rodammer hit a grounder back to the pitcher.
Preston Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to score Godden and make it 1-0 in favor of the Maple Leafs.
After giving up the leadoff single, MVNU starter Logan Fox didn't allow a hit for the rest of the game. He forced nine GC batters to hit into groundouts and seven to hit flyouts. The Cougars only had six hits of their own, but they scored at least once in each inning from the second to the sixth.
The Leafs and Cougars wrap up the series on Saturday in Mount Vernon, with game one starting at 11:00 am. The original game one start time of noon was moved up an hour.
