HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Chris Godden had a season-high three hits in game one at Huntington, but the Maple Leafs baseball team lost twice to the Foresters on Monday by scores of 6-5 and 7-1.
As the leadoff hitter, Godden started the day off with a double to right center.
Jenner Rodammer came up next and reached base on an error by the shortstop and Godden came around to score the first run. With Rodammer now at second base after advancing on the error,
Preston Anderson hit an RBI single to left center to make it 2-0 in favor of the Leafs.
Josh Murphy got the start for Goshen and allowed three earned runs on just three hits in five innings pitched. Before today, two innings was the most he had pitched in a game this season, and four innings was his collegiate best.
Godden had an RBI single in the fifth which tied the game at three, and
Trent Sillett put GC back on top with a two-RBI single to right center. Yet the Foresters responded quickly with a home run in the bottom of the inning, and they retook the lead in the sixth to go up 6-5.
Benjamin Witterstaetter allowed just one hit and no earned runs in the final 2.1 innings, but the Goshen offense didn't score any runs in the final four frames and lost by a run.
David Lopez had the loss and is now 2-4 this season. Godden finished 3-4 at the plate with a double, two runs and an RBI. Sillett had two RBIs and a walk.
The Maple Leafs were first to score in game two as well, but Huntington came back with seven runs between the second and fourth innings. Goshen has been the first team to score in their last five games, but they are 0-5 in those contests.
Trent Sillett hit a sac fly to right field in the first inning that scored Godden - who walked to start the game. But the home team's offense attacked back, led by RBI doubles in the second and third and an RBI triple in the fourth. Goshen had five hits and four walks but ten strikeouts, compared to three for Huntington. The Leafs left eight runners on base.
Lance Wilson took the loss for the Leafs.
Dalton Soergel came in to throw 2.1 innings in relief and gave up no runs and three hits. Goshen's hits came from
Jenner Rodammer,
Preston Anderson,
Nate Lange,
Justin Dambruck and
Austin Martin.
With the loss in game one, Goshen is no longer able to clinch a spot in the Crossroads League tournament. Goshen plays #21 Taylor at home on Thursday, April 27, at 1:00 pm. They face the Trojans again at home on Friday for Senior Day. Game one will start at 1:00 pm that day and the seniors will be recognized between the games.
