GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen softball team secured the five-seed in the Crossroads League tournament, but they ended the regular season with two home losses against Spring Arbor. The Cougars won 8-2 and 6-1 on Saturday.
Goshen was held to just three hits in the first game. The first hit for GC came when there was one out in the bottom of the sixth when
Bianca Diamond doubled. Goshen scored a run in the first inning, but it came due to walks, a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. SAU put up three runs in the second and five in the fourth. The Maple Leafs had two hits in the seventh, and
Kaylee Kates hit an RBI single to score
Kamille Badibanga, but it wasn't enough to rally back.
Goshen had four errors in the game.
Alisyn Catenacci threw seven innings with seven strikeouts, two walks and four earned runs. Two of Goshen's hits were doubles from Diamond and Badibanga.
The Leafs had four more errors in the second game.
Grace Schmitt had the start and allowed four runs in 5.1 innings, but only one was earned.
Shea VanScoter had half of the team's hits in the game. She had a solo home run in the first and two singles.
Ella Mcleod had two singles - her 14th multi-hit game this season.
VanScoter has 70 hits this season, three away from tying the season record set in 2019 by
Emily Cummings. She is in the top ten of numerous career program records as just a sophomore - batting average, runs, hits, stolen bases, doubles, home runs, RBIs, ERA and wins.
Goshen is the five-seed in the league tournament and will face the eight-seed Taylor Trojans on Tuesday, May 2, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, at 2:00 pm. With a loss, the Leafs would be out of the tournament. With a win, they would face either three-seed Mount Vernon Nazarene or four-seed Spring Arbor on Wednesday.
