Mcleod's grand slam highlights Goshen's split with Saints

Esme Pico earned the win in game two

GOSHEN, Ind. - After being run-ruled in game one, Goshen rallied to win game two against St. Francis (Ill.) on Wednesday at home. Goshen lost 9-0 in five innings in game one but won game two 8-4.

Game One
Saints pitcher Kiersten Manning started strong, striking out the first ten Goshen hitters. The Leafs finished with just one hit, a single to right field by Bianca Diamond in the bottom of the fourth. Manning didn't allow any earned runs in her five innings on the mound, with 12 strikeouts and two walks.

Goshen starter Alisyn Catenacci allowed eight earned runs in five innings, striking out five.

Game Two
St. Francis had a sacrifice fly in the first inning of game two, but the Leafs finally found their groove in the bottom of the first. Kaylee Kates walked to start the inning, and then Shea VanScoter doubled to center. Diamond came up next and hit a sac fly to score Kates. Mckenzie Richardson and Catenacci walked to load the bases. Ella Mcleod then connected on a grand slam home run to quickly jump the score to 5-1. That would be all the runs Goshen needed, but they added a few more.

Diamond had an RBI single in the second and a solo home run in the fourth. Rachel Kates had an RBI single in the third to score Mcleod. Diamond finished the game 2-2 with a run and three RBIs. She is hitting .583 so far through this young season and is 4-4 on stolen base attempts. VanScoter was 2-4 with a double, and Mcleod had four RBIs and two runs scored.

This was Goshen's first win against the Saints, dating back to 2006 - they have been 1-4 against them since then. Esme Pico earned the win. As the starter, she threw 5.2 innings and allowed two earned runs. Camryn Barrows didn't allow any runs and just one hit in her 1.1 innings on the mound. Goshen has outscored their opponents 27-6 in games she pitched in.

Next, the Leafs will play ten games over five days as a part of the Space Coast Spring Games in Melbourne, Florida, at the USSSA Space Coast Complex. Those games are from February 26 through March 1.
