Goshen loses in five sets for second straight match

Leafs fight back from two sets down, lose fifth 15-8

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. - Goshen rallied from being two sets down to force a fifth set against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Friday night, but the Pomeroys won 25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 15-8. Three of Goshen's five losses this season have come in five sets.

SMWC is now 6-1 to start the season. Neither team hit the ball well in the first set, as the teams combined for 17 attack errors. The Pomeroys had a set point at 24-17 when the Leafs went off on a 5-0 run to make it 24-22 when the home team finally got the winning point on a kill by Marko Zolnjan. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods had seven blocks in the set.

Goshen had nine more kills in the second set compared to the first but still several errors as SMWC went up 2-0. The Pomeroys had many service and attack errors in the third to give the Maple Leafs the win, and Goshen played strong in the second half of the fourth set to force the fifth.

SMWC built a quick 6-2 lead to force a Goshen timeout. It didn't do much to help the cause, though. The Pomeroys still outscored the Leafs 9-6 after the timeout to win the fifth 15-8.

Ishmail Bangura had 19 kills and seven digs but also five service errors and four reception errors. Bruno Barac led the team with nine digs, two block assists and two aces. Igor Sapucaia had 36 assists.

Goshen gets a second chance to defeat Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday at noon. Then, they will face Brescia on the same court at 2:00 pm as a part of a tri-match.
