Leafs sweep Tuesday competition, walk-off win on Wednesday

Goshen is 3-0 in one-run games this year

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Maple Leafs softball team is now 5-1 in the Space Coast Spring Games this season and 8-2 overall. The Leafs took down Webber International 5-3 and Oakland City 3-2 on Tuesday. They lost to Keiser 9-7 on Wednesday but won on a walk-off against Florida Memorial 5-4 in eight innings. Goshen is 3-0 in one-run games this year.

Goshen vs Oakland City
The Mighty Oaks took an early lead with an RBI single in the first inning. That was the only earned run that Goshen starter Shea VanScoter allowed, though. In four innings, she allowed one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Carissa Fillingame hit an RBI triple in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1. Olivia Gibson and Kyra Wilson each had RBI singles in the sixth, which advanced the lead to 3-1.

Oakland City had an RBI groundout to cut the deficit in half but Barrows prevented them from scoring in the seventh. The Maple Leafs prevailed with a 3-2 win.

Goshen had eight hits and three came from Olivia Gibson. Gibson was 3-3 with two runs and an RBI. it was her first three-hit game since April 1, 2022, at Huntington.

Goshen vs Keiser
Keiser scored four first inning runs off of Goshen starter Esme Pico. Yet Pico gained her composure and held the Seahawks scoreless the next two innings. The Leafs were on the board when Bianca Diamond hit an RBI single in the second but Keiser added another four runs in the fourth to go up 8-1. Diamond picked up her second RBI on a groundout in the fourth and it was 8-2 going into the seventh.

The Seahawks added one unearned run off of Alisyn Catenacci, who allowed just two hits and no earned runs in three innings of relief. Goshen started a comeback in the bottom half of the inning. Carissa Fillingame was hit by a pitch and Diamond singled. Jasmin Smith came into pinch hit and delivered with a two-RBI double down the left field line and advanced to third on the throw. Rachel Kates had a two-RBI double to left that cut the deficit to two, but Keiser came away victorious 9-7.

Diamond was 2-3 with two RBIs and a run. Olivia Gibson scored twice and went 2-3 at the plate. Ellie Van Heerde was 2-2 with a run scored and Rachel Kates and Jasmin Smith had two RBIs apiece.

The win was the fifth straight for Keiser. They are now 11-4 this season.

The Maple Leafs quickly rebounded from the loss with their second walk-off winner over the last three days.

Camryn Barrows had the start for Goshen and threw a gem. She went eight innings and allowed four runs, though only one was an earned run. She gave up just four hits and had four strikeouts and four walks.

The Lions scored their first run in the third inning, an unearned run on a groundout after a throwing error earlier in the inning. They took a two run lead in the top of the fifth, but Carissa Fillingame came around the bases to score Goshen's first run in the bottom of the fifth. Ellie Van Heerde scored later in the inning and the score stayed 2-2 after seven to send the game to extras.

With a runner at second to start the eighth, Florida Memorial batter Heidy Olivo hit a groundout to the shortstop with the runner caught in a rundown. The runner was called out, but Olivo reached second safely. However, after a long controversial discussion, the officials reversed the decision and called the runner at third safe as well. The Lions had two RBI groundouts and both runners scored to make it 4-2.

In the bottom of the inning, Goshen started with a flyout and then Olivia Gibson walked with Rachel Kates already on second. Ella Mcleod hit an RBI single to center to score Rachel Kates. Olivia Gibson was called at home on the next play, a fielder's choice hit by Bianca Diamond. Then with two outs, Shea VanScoter hit a two-RBI single to left field that brought in Diamond and Mcleod as the Leafs won 5-4 in eight innings.

Barrows secured the win and has yet to earn a loss this season. VanScoter provided two of Goshen's six hits and the team's only extra-base hit. Goshen's five runs came from five different players - Rachel Kates, Ella Mcleod, Bianca Diamond, Carissa Fillingame and Ellie Van Heerde. Florida Memorial dropped to 10-4 with the loss.

On Thursday, Goshen faces Florida National at 12:15 pm and will take on Michigan-Dearborn for the second time this week at 2:30.
