BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Joseph Cerda led the Goshen offense,
Lance Wilson and
David Lopez did the job on the mound, and
Brad Stoltzfus picked up win number one as head coach of the Goshen baseball program as the Leafs split a doubleheader at Union College on Saturday. The Bulldogs won game one 14-5 before the Leafs took game two 3-2.
"It was a great win overall today," Stoltzfus shared after the games. "It was a collective team effort and the pitchers and defense did their jobs."
Game One
Union scored runs in each of the first three innings to go up 5-0.
Joseph Cerda started the Goshen offensive attack with a solo shot in the fourth inning. In the fifth,
Jenner Rodammer hit a two-RBI double and Cerda had an RBI double that scored Rodammer.
Joshua Rubio walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at five.
The Bulldogs answered immediately with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and followed that with four more in the sixth. They finished with nine hits, eight walks, and just one strikeout.
AJ Lenn didn't allow any walks as the starter, allowing four earned runs in four innings. Cerda had two hits - a double and a home run. He scored twice and had two RBIs. Rodammer had a double and two RBIs and
Chase Smith and
Chris Godden each hit singles.
Game Two
The next game saw a dominant effort on the mound from
Lance Wilson and
David Lopez. Wilson allowed a run early in the first inning but settled in by not allowing any more in his next three innings on the mound. He finished with two strikeouts and no walks in four innings pitched, allowing one run on four hits. He got some offensive help in the third as the Leafs loaded the bases and
Trent Sillett walked to score the first run for GC.
Joseph Cerda continued his offensive firepower from game one with a two-RBI single later in the inning to give Goshen the lead at 3-1.
That would be Goshen's only hit in the game, but it was all they would need.
David Lopez allowed a solo homer in the seventh, but he allowed just that one run and two hits in three innings in relief. The Bulldogs finished with five errors whereas Goshen had one.
"While the first win is nice, the team has shifted focus already to the next game at hand," said Stoltzfus.
Before the win, the Leafs had lost their last seven games to Union dating back to 2009, including a four-game sweep last season. The teams play on Sunday starting at 10:00 am - the start time for game one was moved up two hours from 12:00 pm.
