Leafs lose leads to Marian to start conference play

Goshen walked 12 times in game one

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Goshen lost both games of a doubleheader at Marian on Friday despite having leads in both games. Marian won game one 18-11 and the second 8-5.

Game One
Goshen held an 8-3 lead in the middle of the fifth inning of game one. The Leafs had two second-inning runs when Andres Garcia reached base on a fielder's choice. The Marian first baseman attempted to get the Goshen runner out at home, but the throw sailed high. Justin Dambruck and Josephe Cerda scored as a result of the error.

Cerda hit an RBI double in the third and Chris Godden walked with the bases loaded later in the inning. Garcia had an RBI single in the fifth, followed by Curtis Huffman walking with the bases loaded again. Pinch runner Joey Paternostro scored on a wild pitch. By that point, it was 8-3.

Goshen took Marian's starter out after four innings, allowing six earned runs and five walks. Lance Wilson threw five innings for Goshen, striking out seven and walking three. Wilson had six strikeouts in his previous ten innings pitched this season. The seven strikeouts are the most he has had in an outing at GC, beating his previous record of four.

However, the Knights found their rhythm eventually, a game after beating Tougaloo College 26-0. Marian had two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Then they put up nine in the eighth, capitalized by a three-run home run by Pierson Barnes and a grand slam off the bat of Bryce Davenport. Goshen scored twice in the top of the ninth, including a solo shot from Jenner Rodammer, but 18-11 would be the final result.

Chris Godden went 2-4 with two RBIs, two walks and a run scored. Joseph Cerda was 2-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Justin Dambruck scored three times and Jenner Rodammer twice. The Leafs walked 12 times, just one behind the 13 walks they had at Union on February 4 this year. In the three-game series against Lindsey Wilson, Goshen walked a combined eight times.

The 11 runs tie the most runs Goshen has scored in a game against Marian since 2017. Yet the 18 runs allowed against the Knights was the most against them since 2010.

Game Two
Marian led first in the next game, starting with an RBI single and a solo home run to go up 2-0. The Leafs tied it in the third when Trent Sillett came through with a two-RBI single and they took the lead later in the inning as Joseph Cerda hit an RBI single to left.

The Knights retook the lead with two runs in the third and another in the fourth. Cerda hit a home run in the fifth and Joshua Rubio scored on an error in the sixth to tie it up again. Yet Marian scored three runs in the sixth. GC didn't have an answer in the seventh as they lost by three.

Goshen had no errors in the game for the third time this season, but only the first time they lost the game as well. David Lopez went five innings as the starter, but Connor Daniel had the loss, allowing three earned runs in one inning pitched. Sillett and Cerda had two RBIs apiece. Justin Dambruck walked twice and finished with four walks in the doubleheader. In his previous 11 games this season, he had only walked once.

Goshen will host Marian for the remaining two games in the series at noon on Sunday, March 3.
