GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen defeated Bethel in a three-set sweep on Thursday night. Along with the baseball and softball teams, Goshen has beaten Bethel in the five most recent matchups between the school. The men's volleyball team has yet to lose a set against Bethel at home all-time, now 6-0 in those sets.
Hasan Hadzic had five aces in the first set. The Leafs went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead and never looked back. They scored the last seven points of the set to win dominantly, 25-14. Goshen had an even longer 9-0 run in the middle of the second set to go from a 9-9 tie to doubling up the Pilots with an 18-9 score. GC went on to win 25-17.
The third set was the closest, as Bethel had a lead as late as 19-18. But Goshen scored seven of the final nine points to complete the sweep. The Leafs led in every significant statistical category - points (54-33), kills (39-23), aces (6-4), blocks (9-6), assists (40-22) and digs (40-19). Goshen had a .361 hitting percentage, while Bethel was at .048.
Hasan Hadzic and Ishmail Bagura each had 13+ kills and hitting percentages over .300.
Igor Sapucaia averaged over ten kills per set with 31 in the match and had 11 digs, the first time he has had more than seven in a match this season.
Ian Fox led the team with six block assists.
Lawrence Tech forfeited their February 24 match against Goshen earlier in the day due to an ineligible player. Goshen had lost that match in five sets, but it now counts as a win. That puts Goshen's current record at 10-11 and 4-8 in the conference. Goshen will attempt to extend their win streak to three at Bethel on Tuesday, April 2, at 7:00 pm.
