GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen lost the first two games of a four-game set with Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday at Sarge Yoder Field. The Cougars won game one 12-6 and game two 19-7.
Game One
Both teams had 14 hits in game one, but MVNU did a better job of converting them to runs. Goshen led early after a sac fly from
Peyton Smith made it 1-0, and third-inning RBI singles from
Chase Smith and
Nathan Pinedo made it 3-1. The Cougars scored three in the fourth to take the lead, but Goshen tied it in the fifth off of a single to right from
Joey Paternostro.
Chase Smith had an RBI double in the seventh that kept the game tied, 5-5.
MVNU scored twice in the seventh and held the lead for the rest of the game.
Andres Garcia scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh, but a big five-run eighth inning for the Cougars made it 12-6, which would stay the score until the end.
Goshen pitchers had two strikeouts and nine walks. One of those strikeouts came from
Drew Miles, who threw the final 1.1 innings and didn't allow any earned runs or walked batters.
Joseph Cerda had three of Goshen's 14 hits.
Andres Garcia,
Trent Sillett,
Peyton Smith and
Chase Smith had two hits each.
Game Two
The second game was more lopsided from the start. The Cougars had eight runs on nine hits in the first inning and had a 10-0 lead after two. Goshen had a five-run third inning to cut the deficit in half.
Joseph Cerda had a two-run home run in the inning and
Trent Sillett and
Nathan Pinedo had RBI singles.
Yet, MVNU scored five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Comparatively, Goshen managed one run in each of those innings. The Leafs scored a run from
Andres Garcia after a fielder's choice and a triple from
Curtis Huffman that scored Pinedo. Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh innings and the final score was 19-7.
Josh Murphy lost after just one inning of work and is 0-3 this season.
Drew Miles threw 1.2 innings and again didn't allow earned runs or walks. He has yet to allow a walk in the seven innings he has pitched this year and has a 2.57 ERA, the lowest among players who have pitched more than an inning. Goshen's six hits came from six different players.
The Maple Leafs host MVNU again on Saturday, April 20, at noon. Nine seniors will be recognized following the end of the first game of the doubleheader.
