Leafs win fourth straight with sweep against MVNU

Goshen has won 12 of their last 13 sets

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen men's volleyball team has won 12 of their last 13 sets and is on a four-match win streak after defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene in three sets on Friday. In their seven matches against each other all-time, this was the first time that one of the teams needed just three sets to beat the other. The Leafs are 5-2 in the series.

After the Cougars had a 22-20 lead in the first set, the Maple Leafs scored six of the last eight points to win 26-24. MVNU never had a lead in the second set, as Goshen started on a 4-0 run and ended on a 7-0 run in a lopsided 25-14 set win. 

In an exciting finish to the third set, Goshen led 18-15 before allowing five straight points for Mount Vernon. Goshen took the lead back at 21-20 and held on to win 25-22.

Hasan Hadzic had 20 kills and an insane .621 hitting percentage. He added six aces. Hadzic continues to lead the NAIA in both kills per set (4.84) and service aces per set (1.03). Ishmail Bangura had 12 kills, a .400 hitting percentage and seven digs. Sawyer Frystak added six kills with a .667 hitting percentage. As a team, the Leafs hit a season-best .459 against a Mount Vernon team that came into the match with a respectable 9-5 record in the WHAC. The Leafs are now 8-0 when they have a hitting percentage above .300. Igor Sapucaia had 36 assists, averaging 12 per set.

Goshen (12-11, 6-8 WHAC) and Mount Vernon Nazarene will square off again on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in Goshen. The men's volleyball seniors will be recognized before the match.
