Hogan breaks school record as men's cross country finishes eighth at Great Lakes Challenge

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Drew Hogan finished second overall in the ranked "maroon" race. He led the men's team with three finishers in the top 20. The men's team placed eighth of 23, beating #16 Aquinas and #18 Cornerstone. Kassandra Ortega won her race as the women's team finished fourth of 23 teams in the "white" race.

Hogan and eventual winner Mehdi Nait Hamoud (Madonna) remained close throughout the race, exchanging split times identical to the tenth of a second through 1600m, 3200m, 4800m, 6400m and 8000m. The winner beat Hogan by just a tenth of a second. Hogan's time of 24:18.2 breaks the previous school record of 24:21.5, set by Mathew Keitany in 2024. Hogan's time was 7.5 seconds ahead of the time that won him the NAIA national runner of the week earlier this season.

Behind Hogan, Duncan Kogei finished in tenth position in a new personal best time of 24:33.4, and Mathew Keitany finished in 20th with 24:49.1. This marks the first time in program history that three men have gone under 24:50 in the same race.

Also in the men's race, Jacob Friesen finished 60th in a time of 25:27.7, taking over 25 seconds off his season best. Jesse Bontrager also took over 20 seconds off of his personal best, coming home in a time of 26:25.5 to place 150th. Isaiah Beiter placed 184th in a time of 27:12.0, just ahead of Samuel Klopfenstein, who came home in 191st in a time of 27:28.2. Demetrio Garcia rounded out the finishers for Goshen, finishing 201st in a time of 28:53.1. The team's combined score of 125:34 is a school record by 89 seconds.

The women's team competed in the "white" non-ranked race. Kassandra Ortega took the victory in the race in a time of 18:43.6. Ortega finished 14 seconds clear of second place. Her time is the 18th fastest 5k time in Goshen history.

Goshen had three finishers in the top 25. Caroline Jelimo finished in 13th position in a time of 19:27.2 and Presley Allen came home in 23rd with a time of 19:42.0.

Britney Ortega finished in 59th. Her 20:17.9 is the first time she has broken 21 minutes this season over 5 kilometers. Her previous best time this season was 21:20.1. Marin Kauffman Smith finished 68th with a time of 20:25.5. Ella Armstrong finished in 79th in a time of 20:47.2, just ahead of Citaly Sanchez, who came home in 20:55.2 for 85th. Izzy Langelier rounded out the finishers in a time of 25:28.4 to finish 184th.

This meet marks the final meet of the regular season for the Maple Leafs. They will compete at the Crossroads League Championships at Indiana Wesleyan on November 7.
