ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Goshen tennis teams each faced their first losses of the fall season. Against Grand Valley State, a Division II school, the men lost 2-5 and the women lost 0-7.
Men - Goshen 2, Grand Valley State 7
The Leafs won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches.
Denis Stanculov and
Timo Novak fought through a tight result at #1 doubles, bouncing back from their quarterfinals loss at the Tennessee Southern Fall Invitational.
Garrett Stoltzfus and Iago Cicuio improved their season doubles record to 7-1 after a 6-3 win in #2 doubles.
Stanculov went 2-0 for the day, as he was the only Maple Leaf to win both his doubles and singles match. He won 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 at #6 singles and now has a 6-1 record in singles, with his only loss at the ITA Regionals round of 16.
Women - Goshen 0, Grand Valley State 7
Blanka Bodo and
Maria Clara Fonte had Goshen's closest result in doubles - a 4-6 loss to Natasha Sengphrachanh and Kalomoira Ralli. The duo had won five straight matches - their last loss was in the ITA Regionals final.
Bodo lost 3-6, 4-6 at #2 singles, also ending a five-match win streak for her. Bodo is 18-4 between singles and doubles matches this season. Fonte also held her own at #5 singles, falling 3-6, 3-6. She had won her last four singles matches and is now 7-2 for the year.
