MIDLAND, Mich. - The Goshen tennis teams began their spring season on Friday at Northwood University before facing Hillsdale College on Saturday. The women lost to Northwood 6-1 and the men 7-0. The Timberwolves compete at the NCAA Division II level.
Women - Goshen 1, Northwood 6
Blanka Bodo and
Uliana Dotsenko won 6-4 in #2 doubles despite Goshen losing the team doubles point. Bodo is now 11-2 in doubles this season and Dotsenko improves to 3-3.
Vishmi Serasinghe and
Marin Kawano lost 6-4 in #1 doubles.
Kawano also put up a fight at #6 singles but fell 6-3, 6-4. Savannah Matuszewski defeated Dotsenko 6-4, 6-4 at #1 singles. Goshen's point came from
Sara Nino at #5 singles. Nino led 1-0 in the first set when her opponent was forced to retire.
Men - Goshen 0, Northwood 7
Garrett Stoltzfus and
Iago Ciucio won 7-5 in #1 doubles, both improving their doubles record this season to 8-1. Their only loss was in the round of 16 at the ITA Regional Tournament. At #3 doubles,
Bruno Ferrera and
Filippo Gallo came up just short, falling 7-6 (9).
Goshen's closest singles matches were at #5 and #6.
Denis Stanculov pushed his match to a tiebreak after taking the second set, but fell short 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 to Finn Buschmaas. Ferrera also forced a tiebreak after winning the second set 7-6 (8), but William Wirak won 6-2, 6-7 (6), 10-5.
Goshen faces Hillsdale at 10:00 am on Saturday.
