MARION, Ind. - The Goshen cross country teams competed at the Crossroads League Championships at Indiana Wesleyan on Friday morning and
Drew Hogan,
Duncan Kogei and
Mathew Keitany made the All-Crossroads League team. The men came in fourth of ten and the women finished ninth.
Men - 4th of 10
Drew Hogan and
Duncan Kogei were at the front for the majority of the race and only placed behind Camden Khon of Spring Arbor, with a time of 24:14.7. Hogan's time of 24:27.1 is his third-fastest and the fourth-fastest in program history. Kogei's time of 24:28.9 was a personal best and the fifth-fastest time in school history. Keitany crossed the line at 24:54.4 and came in 12th, making Goshen one of two schools with three runners in the top 12.
Jacob Friesen had a strong finish as Goshen's fourth runner, coming in at 25:19.4 for 18th place overall - three spots away from being all-conference.
Jesse Bontrager was the fifth runner for the Leafs with a 26:29.8 time, good for 55th place. Goshen had the second-fastest top two time (48:56), top three (73:50.4), top four (99:09.8) and top five time (125:39.6) im program history. All four were only behind the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge in Grand Rapids two weekends ago.
#19 Goshen finished with 80 points, behind #2 Indiana Wesleyan (53 points), #4 Taylor (73 points) and #18 Spring Arbor (75 points). The Maple Leafs placed ahead of #13 Marian (109 points) among others.
Women - 9th of 10
Kassandra Ortega narrowly missed being an All-Crossroads League selection for the Goshen women. She came in 18th with a time of 22:41.3 and had the fifth-best time among all freshmen in the race. The time is the 22nd best in program history when integrating and converting both 5k and 6k times.
Caroline Jelimo came in 40th with a time of 23:20.4, the 14th best 6k time in program history.
Presley Allen crossed the line in 23:48.8, finishing 57th. Ortega and Jelimo combined for the fifth-best top two time in program history, and with Allen, they had the fifth-best top three time as well. Ortega's 6k time converts to the fastest time in program history for a freshman, surpassing Summer Cooper's mark from 2020.
Rounding out Goshen's top five was
Marin Kauffman Smith in 86th with a time of 24:46.2 and
Citlaly Sanchez in 88th with a time of 24:51.3. GC came in ninth, placing ahead of Bethel. Goshen earned two points in the U.S. Highway 20 Cup since both teams placed ahead of Bethel. The Pilots currently lead the series 3-2 this year. Taylor won their 13th straight championship with five runners in the top nine. The Trojans' Jaynie Halterman won the individual title - her second in a row - with a new course record time.
The team qualifiers for the NAIA National Championships will be announced on Tuesday at 5:00 pm. Those races will take place on Friday, November 21, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.
