PARKVILLE, Mo. - The Goshen men's volleyball team lost their last two matches at the Pirate Invitational to finish the tournament with a 1-3 record. The Leafs lost to #6 Park 13-25, 13-25, 12-25 and to Ottawa 25-22, 19-25, 19-25, 23-25.
Goshen vs #6 Park
Goshen never had a lead in any of the sets against the Pirates, the preseason #6 team in the NAIA. Park strung together at least five points in a row in each of the three sets. They finished with a hitting percentage of .500, had more than double Goshen's kills and assists, and put down 12 aces compared the two for GC.
Ben Koop had seven kills and
Avery Laforce had nine assists.
Jaiden Wallace had his first solo block of his young collegiate career. Goshen only had nine digs as a team, their lowest in a match in program history.
Goshen vs Ottawa
Against Ottawa, the Leafs used a 5-0 run in the first set to take a three-point lead and then never let go of it for the rest of the set. The Leafs had 16 kills and just four attack errors in the set.
After the teams were tied 8-8 in the second set, Goshen consistently pulled within one but couldn't quite take a lead after that and lost the set by six. In the third set, GC never had a lead after a 2-1 advantage.
Goshen was down seven a few times in the fourth set but fought back even when Ottawa had match point at 24-21. Goshen won the next two points to make it 24-23 and forced the Braves to use a timeout. After that, OU converted on a kill to win the set and the match.
Alessandro Olgiati had three of Goshen's eight aces - he had two aces in his previous six matches combined.
Avery Laforce had two aces to go with his 41 assists.
Bruno Barac totaled 18 kills and
Ben Koop added 16 with a hitting percentage of .300.
Jonathan Arias and Barac had double-digit digs. Arias had 12 in the match and had 11 in his previous four matches combined.
Goshen is at Olivet Nazarene, a team receiving votes in the coaches poll, on Tuesday, February 4, at 8:00 pm EST.
