COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Goshen baseball team got their first win of the season on the road at IU Columbus on Tuesday. After a 4-9 loss in game one, the Leafs dominated the second game 15-4.
Goshen's 15 walks in game two is their most since at least the 2009 season, since computerized game-by-game files have been kept. The previous high was 13 against Union (Ky.) last season on February 4.
Game One
The Crimson Pride struck first with an RBI double in the bottom of the first. However, the Leafs had a strong response in the top of the second with four runs.
Chase Smith and
Justin Dambruck scored on two separate IU Columbus errors before
Joshua Rubio scored on a passed ball. The only earned run in the top of the inning came from an RBI groundout by
Axell Espino Montero that scored
Curtis Huffman.
That was the end of the scoring for Goshen though, while the Crimson Pride scored one in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and then three in the seventh. The Maple Leafs had six errors in the game, which led to three of the home team's runs being unearned. Six errors ties the most the Leafs have had in a game since March 20, 2021.
Jarrett Willoughby allowed three earned runs in four innings as the starter.
Dylan Pearson had the loss, allowing two earned runs in the next two innings and three walks.
Logan Wilson and
Dakota Perry each allowed no earned runs and no hits in an inning of work. Goshen's hits were a double from
Nick Padron and singles from
Chase Smith and
Trent Sillett.
Game Two
The overwhelming majority of Goshen's 15 runs in the game two win came in just the second and third innings.
Down 2-0, Goshen had 14 batters come to the plate in the second.
Hunter Oborn hit an RBI single to start the GC scoring, followed by
Nick Padron walking in a run.
Nathan Pinedo scored on a wild pitch and
Trent Sillett hit a two-RBI single.
Joel Berkholz added an RBI single and Pinedo and Oborn walked in the last two runs of the inning. By then it was 8-1, and IU Columbus went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
Goshen had another ten batters come to the plate with another six runs.
Fernando Marte Santana had an RBI flyout and
Trent Sillett scored on a Crimson Pride error.
Joel Berkholz hit an RBI groundout,
Justin Dambruck scored on a balk with the bases loaded and
Hunter Oborn and
Nathan Pinedo scored on unearned runs later in the inning.
16 of the game's 19 runs came by the middle of the third inning. Goshen's last run in the fifth was an RBI double from Pinedo.
Giacomo Padilla earned the win, allowing three earned runs in four innings pitched and striking out four.
Brandon Wright Barron threw two innings and allowed one earned run and one hit.
Pedro Hernandez III pitched the last inning, striking out one and allowing no hits or runs.
Goshen had five players with two or more RBIs in the game -
Nick Padron,
Trent Sillett,
Joel Berkholz,
Nathan Pinedo and
Hunter Oborn. 12 different Maple Leafs walked and five scored at least two runs each.
