Maple Leafs fall short in five-set battle with Aquinas

Koop had double-digit kills for a sixth straight match

GOSHEN, Ind. - Men's volleyball nearly completed a reverse sweep against Aquinas at home but lost in the fifth set. The Saints came away with the 3-2 win, winning 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 20-25, 15-9.

Goshen was up 23-22 in the first set when the Saints scored three straight points to go up 1-0. And while the Leafs fought back on a couple of Aquinas' set points in the second, the Saints won another set to go up two sets to none. The Leafs were up big in the third, with a 24-15 lead. Aquinas scored five in a row and forced a GC timeout at one point, but the Leafs still were able to win by five. A 6-0 run in the fourth set gave Goshen the momentum they needed and a strong finish led to another five-point win.

The fifth set started out in favor of the visitors. Aquinas scored the first four points - two from Goshen attack errors and two on kills by Connor Staats from Oniel Alvarez. They never gave up their lead and proceeded to win by six.

Ben Koop had 16 kills for Goshen, his sixth straight match with double-digit kills. Last season he didn't have a single match with double-digit kills and he already has 11 this season. Bruno Barac played a part in multiple areas. He had nine kills, four aces, nine digs, four block assists, two solo blocks and two assists. Avery LaForce had 26 assists, Igor Sapucaia had 22 and Jonathan Arias had nine digs.

Goshen hosts Indiana Tech, a team receiving votes in the coaches poll, on Tuesday, March 4, at 7:00 pm.
