INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Goshen lost both games of a doubleheader on the road at Marian on Saturday. The Knights dominated game one 20-1, and won game two by a much closer 3-2 score.
Game One
Marian scored in every inning of game one, which was shortened to seven innings due to the run rule, and took advantage of more than just hits. They had 11 hits, but Goshen had four fielding errors, allowed 11 walks, hit five batters with pitches, had three balks and two wild pitches. Meanwhile, the Marian pitchers threw 14 strikeouts and allowed just one walk.
The Knights scored five runs on two hits and two Goshen errors in the first inning. Goshen starter
Logan Wilson had the loss, throwing just the first inning. Marian tacked on another five runs in the fourth inning and had three runs in the second, third and fifth innings before adding one more in the sixth.
Goshen didn't record a hit until
Curtis Huffman led off the top of the fifth with a double to left center.
Hunter Oborn came up next and was hit by a pitch and
Nick Padron hit an RBI single later in the inning to get Goshen on the board.
AJ Carrasquillo also had a single in the game.
Game Two
While Goshen's pitching was greatly improved in the second game, the offense could still only muster another three hits.
Eric Pettipiece allowed no walks in six innings pitched for the Leafs, striking out six batters. He allowed two earned runs, three runs and eight hits. The Knights scored a run in the third, but Goshen backed up Pettipiece with some run support in the fifth.
Just like game one, the Maple Leafs didn't have a hit until the fifth inning. And just like game one, it was
Curtis Huffman who delivered with a double, this time with one out in the inning.
Joshua Rubio and
Aidan Calvey walked to load the bases and
Trent Sillett got Goshen's third straight walk to send Huffman home and tie the game at one.
Nick Padron hit an RBI single next to right filed and Muriel scored to give the Leafs the lead 2-1.
Marian scored on a sac fly in the fifth and then had an RBI single in the sixth to retake the lead 3-2. Gohsen left a runner on base in their last two innings and the Knights came through with a one-run victory.
After a rough first outing against Shawnee State,
Eric Pettipiece has seen his earned run average decrease in each appearance since then. In his last 13 innings pitched, all against Crossroads League competition, he has 12 strikeouts and just one walk allowed.
In addition to Padron and Huffman,
Chase Smith had a hit for the Leafs, a double in the sixth.
Goshen is at Marian again on Sunday at 1:00 pm to finish the series.
