Whittington gets first three collegiate hits in Goshen's loss to Grace

Hernandez throws four innings in relief with four strikeouts and no walks

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen baseball team lost a single seven-inning makeup game against Grace on Monday afternoon at Sarge Yoder Field. The Lancers won 12-1 as Goshen's Jackson Whittington had the first three hits of his collegiate career.

Grace built up a 6-0 lead after two innings. Their two runs in the first inning came with two outs and they doubled the lead with a two-run home run in the second inning. A pair of back-to-back RBI doubles later in the inning made it 6-0.

The Lancers scored once in the fourth and added another four runs in the seventh. The Leafs got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Dambruck and Trent Sillett were both hit by pitches and Chase Smith walked to load the bases. Axell Espino Montero reached base on a fielder's choice and Dambruck scored.

Goshen starter Giacomo Padilla had the loss, allowing seven earned runs in two innings pitched. Pedro Hernandez threw a solid four innings in relief, striking out four batters and not allowing any walks. He allowed one earned run on five hits. His longest outing before today had been two innings.

Jackson Whittington went 3-3 at the plate and had three of Goshen's five hits. These were the first three hits of the freshman's collegiate career. The Evansville, Indiana native had been 0-5 this season before today.
