FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Goshen baseball season ended on Saturday at Saint Francis. The Cougars won both games with an 11-10 win in 11 innings in game one and a 4-2 win in the second game.
Game One
Goshen's 11 inning loss in game one was their second one-run extra-inning loss in the last ten days.
Aidan Calvey hit a two-RBI single in the first to put the Leafs up early. The Cougars scored nine runs in the first four innings and led 10-2 after seven.
Then, in the top of the eighth, the Leafs went on a tear with an eight-run inning. The Leafs had five hits in the inning. The first two runs were walks with the bases loaded. The third scored on an error and the fourth on a wild pitch. Then it was an RBI single, an RBI double, followed by a two-RBI single. That tied the game and it wasn't broken until the bottom of the 11th when the Cougars won on an RBI single.
Corey Brown threw 3.1 innings and only allowed one earned run on two hits but took the loss.
Aidan Calvey finished 4-5 with a run, two RBIs and a walk. He has three multi-hit games this season, but two have been four-hit games. He started his freshman year 0-11 at the plate but finished with a .243 batting average.
Trent Sillett,
Chase Smith and
AJ Carrasquillo all had two hits each.
Chris Godden and
Axell Espino Montero each walked three times.
Game Two
Eric Pettipiece allowed two earned runs on three hits in 5.2 innings on the mound for the Leafs. He had seven walks and three strikeouts. He also didn't get much run support until late.
The Cougars were up 4-0 after six innings when the Leafs made a late push in the top of the seventh of the seven-inning game.
Joshua Rubio doubled to start the inning and
Nick Padron singled to bring in a run. With two outs,
Axell Espino Montero singled to move Padron to third, who scored on a passed ball in the next at-bat. However, that ended the scoring drive for Goshen, and USF won 4-2.
Rubio had two of Goshen's five hits with a single and a double. Espino Montero, Padron and
Joey Paternostro hit singles.
Goshen finished the season with a 7-37 record overall and a 6-30 record in the Crossroads League.
