Cougars capitalize on error and home runs to end GC softball season

The class of 2025 has more conference wins than any group of seniors in program history

UPLAND, Ind. - The 2025 Goshen softball season ended on Tuesday evening in Upland, Indiana, as the Maple Leafs lost on day one of the Crossroads League Tournament. Mount Vernon Nazarene broke a 3-3 tie to win 8-3 in the single-elimination game. Goshen was the seven-seed and MVNU was the six-seed.

The Goshen softball class of 2025 leaves with more conference wins than any senior class in program history with 58 wins. The previous record was 54 wins from the class of 2024.

Shea VanScoter was Goshen's starter and she took down MVNU quickly in the first inning. In the top of the second, Ella Mcleod and Grace Schmitt were hit by pitches in back-to-back at-bats. Kamille Badibanga hit a bunt single to load the bases and Carissa Fillingame walked in a run. VanScoter hit a sac fly later in the inning to give Goshen a 2-0 advantage.

The Cougars had one baserunner in the second but still were unable to score. After Goshen had a quick top of the third, MVNU took a lead with a three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning. Goshen tied it in the fourth on a sac fly from Carissa Fillingame that scored Grace Schmitt, who had doubled down the left field line to start the inning.

Mount Vernon had a solo shot to take a 4-3 lead, but then the inning began to unravel. With two outs and a runner on first, the Cougars reached on an error to put runners at the corners. Then a double to right center scored two unearned runs, and another home run scored two more unearned. Esme Pico came in to pitch and got the Leafs out of the inning. VanScoter finished with four earned runs and eight total runs allowed in 3.2 innings. She struckout one and walked one.

Goshen left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth after VanScoter walked, Alyssa McDonald singled and Pico was hit by a pitch. Fillingame singled in the sixth but was left stranded and Tatem Adams had the same result after her single in the seventh as the Cougars won 8-3.

Pico allowed no runs in 1.1 innings and Camryn Barrows came in to pitch the bottom of the sixth, also allowing no runs. Goshen finished with five hits - a double from Schmitt and singles from McDonald, Adams, Badibanga and Fillingame. Schmitt scored twice for GC.

Except for the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season, Goshen has made the league tournament each year since 2019. Against MVNU, the Leafs have lost eight straight and have allowed six or more runs in all of those games. The Cougars have won 20 of the last 21 against the Maple Leafs.

Shea VanScoter ends her career as the program leader in hits and doubles. She is second in runs, second in home runs, fourth in stolen bases, fourth in batting average, fourth in RBIs, tied for sixth in wins and seventh in ERA. Alyssa McDonald is the career leader in triples and is also in the top ten in batting average, runs, hits, stolen bases, doubles, RBIs and walks. Kaylee Kates finishes her time as a Maple Leaf in the top ten for stolen bases and walks. Carissa Fillingame is fourth all-time in walks and tied for ninth in triples.

Mount Vernon Nazarene will play Saint Francis at 10:00 am on Wednesday. The winner plays Marian at 3:00 pm.
