GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen bowling teams started off their second season as a program by competing in their first ever home tournament in the city of Goshen - the Maple City Classic.
Brendan Riley was the top individual men's performer at the event, and the Goshen men placed third of five teams. The Goshen women had four of the five members of the All-Tournament team and placed second of three teams.
Men - 3rd of 5
Riley had regular game scores of 245, 193 and 247 for a 228.3 average. He placed first out of 56 bowlers, and the next closest average was 212.3 by Max Jenness from the University of Olivet.
Blake Fisher was sixth overall with a 187.7 average and
DaVeon Welch got into the top ten in ninth with a 184.7 average. Freshman
Thomas Podlesny was 13th and
Hayden Grindle was right behind in 14th.
The varsity men were in second after the regular games, with scores of 974, 833 and finishing with their strongest, a 990, in the third game. Their scores among the 12 baker games ranged from 136 to 241, and they finished third among the teams there. With an overall pin total of 4,982, the Leafs were behind Olivet (5,399 pins) and Lindsey Wilson (5,087 pins) and placed ahead of Spoon River College (4,758 pins) and Ferris State (4,401 pins).
Riley has totaled 11,355 pins across the regular games in his young Goshen College career. Through 56 games, his average score is 202.8 pins per game.
The men's junior varsity team placed second of three teams.
Women - 2nd of 3
Lily Kelley finished second of 30 bowlers, the top finisher among the GC women. As a part of the JV team, Kelley had scores of 185, 199, and 156 for an average of 180.0 pins per game.
Guliana Castiglione was next with a 177.7 average to place third.
Bailey Friars was fourth overall with a 174.7 average and
Kaidance Gates came in fifth with a 174.3 average. With 540 total pins, Kelley was four pins away from the leader, Hollie Wendel of Olivet.
The Goshen varsity women led after the regular games, putting up scores of 798, 887 and 810 and taking a 42-pin lead. The Leafs had baker game scores between 106 and 191, while Olivet had at least 150 pins each game and over 220 in two of them. Olivet finished with a total of 4,593 pins, followed by Goshen's 4,401 and 3,891 from Lindsey Wilson.
Jessica Spidell set a new single-game career high score of 193 with her first regular game. It topped her previous best of 191 from her third game at the Intercollegiate Singles Sectionals last season.
Goshen is at the Midwest Collegiate Championship on October 4 and 5 in Detroit, Michigan.
