DEFIANCE, Ohio - Men's volleyball earned their first WHAC win of the season and their sixth overall with a three-set victory on the road at Defiance. The Maple Leafs won 28-26, 25-15, 25-14.
The Yellow Jackets kept it close from the start. Goshen led 13-10 when Defiance had a 4-0 run, and the teams were within a point of each other from when Goshen trailed 17-18 until their lead at 27-26. The Yellow Jackets had three set points at 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25, but they also had two attack errors and a service error that allowed Goshen to come back each time. At the end, a block from
Mathis Doladille served as the penultimate point and an attack error on Defiance led to a 28-26 first-set win for Goshen.
The Yellow Jackets had a negative hitting percentage in the next two sets. While Goshen's hitting percentage wasn't great - the .143 hitting percentage is the lowest among their six wins this season - they did enough to still win each set handily. Defiance led 6-3 in the second when Goshen went off on a 13-2 run.
Alessandro Olgiati had two aces during a 5-0 run at the end of that stretch. The Leafs led 18-9 at that point and cruised to a 25-15 win. Goshen had a 6-0 run in the middle of the third set that took a two-point lead to an eight-point lead. An ace from Olgiati ended the match as Goshen won 25-14.
Gavin Furgerson led the Maple Leafs with eight kills and
Mathis Doladille had seven kills, no attack errors and a .583 hitting percentage. On the defensive side, he provided three solo blocks and three block assists. This was his first match with at least three solo blocks.
Ishmail Bangura,
Nash Hubick and
Ryan Kabrich all had multiple block assists.
Ben Koop led the team with eight digs and Hubick had 24 assists, averaging eight per set.
Four of Goshen's six wins this season have been in sweeps. The Leafs are at Indiana Tech on Saturday, February 21, at 2:00 pm.
