Tight margins define Goshen's 4-3 losses to Cedarville

Maple Leafs shine at #2, 4 and 5 singles on both sides but drop decisive doubles points

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Goshen tennis teams both lost tight matches that included numerous tiebreakers against Cedarville on Saturday in Fort Wayne at Wildwood Racquet Club. Both Maple Leafs teams lost 4-3.

Women - Goshen 3, Cedarville 4
The Cedarville women won the doubles point and the teams split the singles matches 3-3. Vishmi Serasinghe did not compete due to illness.

Goshen's doubles win came at #2 from the team of Maria Clara Fonte and Sara Nino, who looked dominant in a 6-1 win. Fonte is 11-3 in doubles this season. Blanka Bodo won at #2 singles in a tight match, pulling away 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 10-2 to improve to 9-4 in singles matches this year. Marin Kawano and Sara Nino won by identical scores in #4 and #5 singles respectively, 6-2, 6-1. Kawano is 7-5 in singles and Nino is 9-3 this season.

Men - Goshen 3, Cedarville 4
The men had a #2 doubles win from the team of Mahmut Gumeric and Timo Novak, winning 6-3. Gumeric, who arrived for the spring semester, is 2-0 in doubles and Novak is 8-3 this season. The Yellow Jackets won the doubles point 2-1, however. Denis Stanculov did not compete as he continues to battle a shoulder injury.

Not only were the scores between the men's and women's teams identical, but where they had their wins and losses came at the same spots. Timo Novak had an easy 6-1, 6-2 win at #2 singles and is 12-3 at singles, winning 80% of those matches this year. Garrett Stoltzfus won 6-3, 6-2 at #4 singles and Filippo Gallo at #5 singles 7-5, 6-2. Stoltzfus is 8-5 in singles and Gallo is now 8-4.

Goshen heads to Missouri the second weekend of March. They will face William Woods at 12:00 eastern on Friday, March 13, and challenge Missouri Baptist the next day at 11:00 am eastern.
