HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Goshen tennis teams faced their second NCAA Division II Michigan opponent in as many days when they took on Hillsdale on Saturday. The men won 5-2 while the women lost by the same score.
Men - Goshen 5, Hillsdale 2
Goshen won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point.
Garrett Stoltzfus and
Iago Ciucio won 6-2 at #1 doubles, Emre Gumeric and
Timo Novak won 6-2 at #2 and
Bruno Ferrera and
Filippo Gallo won 6-3 at #3. Ciucio and Stoltzfus are now 9-1 in doubles this season.
The Maple Leafs came up clutch in singles - as three of their four singles wins involved winning a tiebreak.
Iago Ciucio didn't need a tiebreak win at #1 singles, but he came up big in the third set, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Timo Novak won at #2 singles 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8) and improved to 11-3 in singles play this season.
Garrett Stoltzfus added a straight-set win at #4, finishing strong in a 6-2, 7-6 (7) victory. Lastly,
Paulo Lopez improved as the competition went on at #6 singles, winning 7-6 (8), 6-2.
Women - Goshen 2, Hillsdale 5
The women lost all three doubles matches, with the closest coming at #2 doubles with
Blanka Bodo and
Uliana Dotsenko's 6-4 defeat. In #3 singles,
Vishmi Serasinghe came through with a narrow 7-5, 7-6 (7) win over Megan Hackman. At #4 singles,
Maria Clara Fonte rallied for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win to improve to 8-3 in singles this season.
Marin Kawano was defeated in a tight match at #6 singles, but Hillsdale's Esther Sura won 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
Goshen faces Cedarville University on Saturday, February 21, at 12:30 pm in Fort Wayne at the Wildwood Racquet Club.
