WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Goshen earned its second win in Crossroads League play on Friday in a doubleheader split against the Lancers. Grace broke the first game open with a six-run sixth inning on the way to a 10-0 win. The Maple Leafs erased an early three-run deficit and pulled away for a 6-3 win in game two, taking control when
Chase Smith launched a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Game One
Grace set the tone in the first for a 2-0 lead. Goshen starter
AJ Lenn settled in after that opening damage and kept the deficit there for much of his outing. Lenn worked 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out four.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the fifth, but from there, the decisive stretch came quickly. Grace sent six runs across in the sixth and built a 9-0 advantage.
Goshen struggled to generate offense against Grace starter Sam Justice and the Lancers' staff. Justice threw six no-hit innings, walking four and striking out five on 86 pitches. Grace's pitchers combined to allow just two hits over eight scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Goshen finished with two hits, four walks and nine runners left on base.
Nathaniel Muriel and
Fernando Marte Santana had singles for the Maple Leafs.
AJ Lenn had the loss.
Game Two
Grace struck first again in the next game with a three-run second. Goshen answered quickly in the third, however, cutting into the deficit and then leveling the game with a three-run rally.
Troy Griffin delivered a sacrifice fly to center that brought home
Steven Lopez, and the Maple Leafs also took advantage of a passed ball and a Grace error to tie it at 3-3.
The Leafs moved in front for good in the fourth. Griffin again supplied the key swing, hitting another sacrifice fly to center to score
Nick Padron and make it 4-3. An inning later, Smith provided the decisive moment. After drawing two walks earlier in the game, he connected on a two-run shot over the right-field fence, stretching the lead to 6-3. He finished with one hit in one official at-bat, scored once and drove in three runs.
The comeback gave ample support to starter
Dylan Pearson, who settled in after the second inning and worked six innings for Goshen. Pearson allowed six hits and three earned runs, walked four and struck out six over 84 pitches. Goshen's staff finished with eight strikeouts in seven innings, while the defense worked around one error.
Kenny Ayala handled the final inning and closed the door cleanly, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out one. Goshen finished with six runs on four hits, drew five walks and produced five RBIs. Grace collected six hits but was held scoreless over the final five innings as the Maple Leafs completed the turnaround.
The teams complete the four-game series at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
