Saint Mary's sweeps Goshen in doubleheader

GC is at Spring Arbor on Monday, hosts Taylor on Tuesday at 11:00 am

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - St. Mary's pulled away with a seven-run second inning in the opener and completed the sweep with a complete-game pitching effort in the second game, beating Goshen 13-5 and 6-2 in a doubleheader Sunday.

Game One
Game one turned on in the second inning. Goshen briefly moved in front, 5-3, after scoring four times in the top half, but St. Mary's answered immediately with seven runs to take control for good. The Maple Leafs opened the day with a first-inning run when Tatem Adams doubled to center to bring home Audrey White. In the second, Brinleigh Arredondo doubled, Bianca Diamond added an RBI single, and White delivered a two-out RBI double as Goshen surged ahead. The momentum didn't last, however, as St. Mary's sent the game in the opposite direction behind a big response that included a triple from Gia Schiavone, who helped key the decisive frame.

St. Mary's added three more runs in the fifth to end the opener, finishing with 13 runs on 11 hits. Goshen collected nine hits and showed extra-base pop with four doubles and two triples, but the Maple Leafs were held scoreless after the second inning. Diamond paced Goshen with two hits, an RBI and two stolen bases. Esme Pico took the loss after working two innings.

Game Two
The second game followed a different shape, but the result was the same. St. Mary's scored twice in the first, added two more in the third and pushed the lead to 6-0 with another two-run fifth. The Maple Leafs finally broke through in the sixth. Kaylee Kline singled in a run, and Molly Klein later drove in another to trim the deficit to 6-2. Goshen again finished with nine hits, with Kline recording two of them. The Leafs had no errors in the game.

Goshen is at Spring Arbor on Monday, March 30, at 3:00 pm. Then, the Leafs are scheduled to host Taylor on Tuesday, March 31, at 11:00 am in an effort to avoid the incoming storms later that evening.
