The Academic All-America® award is the longest-running and most prestigious academic and athletic award for student-athletes, being given out yearly since 1952. The Academic All-District® award is given to student-athletes with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average that are sophomores athletically and academically. Individuals must have been nominated by their Sports Information Department and meet specific performance minimums for their sport.
Schools are limited to six nominees per gender in the at-large program. The NAIA eligible sports that fall into the at-large category are competitive cheer, competitive dance, men's and women's bowling, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's volleyball, women's beach volleyball and men's and women's wrestling. Eligible nominees for men's volleyball must have competed in 90% of the institution's matches or started in at least 66%. Bowlers must have been in the lineup for 75% of an institution's days of varsity competition.
