Leafs Upended At Huntington On Conference Decision Day

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — A day that began with hope of a first-round conference tournament home game ended in disappointment Saturday for the Goshen College men's soccer team as the Maple Leafs were edged 1-0 in a nail-biting regular season finale at Huntington University.

Goshen took the momentum edge into the locker room at halftime in a scoreless tie after Dean Nafziger saved a penalty in the 40th minute, but any hope for a scoreless draw was dashed when Matheus Lozada scored from the right flank just more than five minutes after halftime.

The Maple Leafs had several chances to tie the game over the final two-thirds of an hour, but Spencer Aeschliman and Isaac Huerta both saw their attempts saved by netminder Troy Hester. Nafziger ended up with a considerable advantage in the final save tally, being credited with 13 stops, but would ultimately be credited with the loss.

With the loss, the Maple Leafs dropped to 4-5 in the Crossroads League and 5-12 overall: Huntington is 9-8-1 and also 4-5 in league play. The two teams finish tied for seventh in the conference, with the Foresters winning the tiebreaker head-to-head. Goshen will travel to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday to open the Crossroads League tournament: had the Leafs won, they would have earned the fifth seed and visited Bethel.
