Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — If once is good, twice in a week is even better.
Isaac Huerta scored a game-winning goal in overtime for the second time in as many matches and the Goshen College men's soccer team earned a chilly 1-0 homecoming win over Taylor University Saturday afternoon at the Goshen College Soccer Complex.
Huerta's third goal of the season and the week came 3:41 into the extra session. After receiving a through ball from midfielder Jamie Reid, Huerta cut outside one defender and inside another, then fired to the left goalpost with his right foot to snap a 0-0 deadlock and send the crowd home happy.
Each team had had chances to score in regulation on a day where the mercury hovered in the low 50s and the rain blew sideways across the field into the benches. Giovanny Guthro of Taylor hit the post with a shot in the first 90 seconds. In the waning minutes of regulation, Brodie Nofziger narrowly missed the far post for Goshen as the clock ticked under six minutes to play.
"We started the game very poorly today, very fortunate to not go down a goal in the first two minutes, but some tactical changes at halftime made a difference in how much we were able to get into Taylor's half," said Goshen head coach Arron Patrick. "In the first half, Taylor tried to get us to commit numbers higher up the field so they could catch us out of position. The end result was that I wasn't pleased with our half offensively, but I was pleased with how we stayed organized.
A stiff east wind confined much of the game to the western touchline, the one on Goshen's left in the second half and later overtime.
"At halftime I challenged the lads to press the ball higher, push the pace and be more confident," said Patrick. "Taylor had a couple of chances that caused some trouble, but Dean dealt with those well.
The hosts largely controlled the run of play, taking 19 of the 29 shots, but putting only six on frame. Goshen also took 10 of the match's 12 corner kicks.
Huerta took a game-high eight shots, including five of Goshen's six on frame. Chris Vendrely and Nate Nussbaum added three apiece, with Vendrely contributing the other shot on goal. Dean Nafziger made two saves in goal in posting his first shutout of the year.
"Isaac's ability is that, if you give him chances, he will hurt you," said Patrick. "He topped off a great week for himself and the team. Jadon Chupp and David Bontrager were great in the back today in transition, which was a big reason for the win"
With its second consecutive overtime win, Goshen raises its record to 3-8 on the season. Unusually for a team with that mark, Goshen sits in second place in the Crossroads League: two of the Maple Leafs' three victories are in league play, and nine of the 10 conference teams have already sustained a loss, so 2-1 would be good for runner-up status if the season ended today.
The 2-1 start to conference is the best Goshen has had since posting the same record in their first three 2009 contests. The lone loss among those three games was to Bethel, where Patrick was a senior.
"We have to start games better, but I am proud of our attitude and will to win today," Patrick said. "We need to recover physically and mentally heading into a difficult week, but we are full of confidence and ready for the challenges ahead."
Of course, the season does not end today: Goshen travels for both of its next two matches, however, including a sojourn to Mount Vernon, Ohio, on Wednesday. Kickoff against Mount Vernon Nazarene University is set for 4 p.m.
