WINONA LAKE, Ind. — Sophia Sears scored 15 points, one of four players to score in double figures, and a swarming Goshen College defense forced 35 turnovers Saturday morning as the Maple Leafs knocked off Rochester College 77-56 in women's basketball action at the Hoops for Hope Classic.

Goshen (7-1) jumped out to a 25-7 lead at the quarter, including a 6-0 run and a 14-0 run (the latter spanning four minutes and 58 seconds), and never allowed the Warriors to close the margin within 12 points.

Rochester (5-5) had better luck shooting the ball from outside than inside, sinking 11 of their 19 three-pointers (57.9 percent) and 9 of 33 tries inside the arc (27.3 percent). Goshen held a 38-30 edge on the glass and attempted 18 more field goals than its opponent.

Jo'Mani Thomas added 14 points, bringing her career total to 1,089 and pulling her into a tie for 10^th in Goshen history with 1986 alumna Brenda Ervin. Both Thomas and Sears finished with six field goals: Liz Tecca and Lynnia Noel each made four and finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Thomas pulled down eight rebounds and Sears registered six steals, both game highs. Keshia Ward tracked down seven caroms, including three on offense, and Carver grabbed six.

Goshen begins conference play next week, the first of three rounds of Crossroads League action before the first of the year. The Maple Leafs travel to Spring Arbor University in a game being played on Tuesday, rather than the usual Wednesday, in order to facilitate a longer Thanksgiving break. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the SAU Fieldhouse.
